It's another solid album that's for sure.

Hard to say if it's better than WHBWH just yet. A couple of songs don't quite do it for me (Sunlight/Internal Landscapes)

Lightning Song is perhaps the most uplifting 5 minute song ever recorded.

I'd like to see them go a bit heavier at times, it has to be said.

The Silent Enigma and Serenades exist for that.

I know, but I mean their newer stuff. Just a litte bit, at least.

Some heavier stuff would be interesting but I can't see them doing that beacuse none of the songwriters in the band listen to metal anymore and the only post-Alternative 4 song I would call heavy is Pulled Under at 2000 Metres a Second, which is one of Danny's (and IIRC also Vinny's) least favorite songs. Besides, Serenades is so crushingly heavy that it should satisfy those who want to hear doom metal :metal

I've listened to The Beginning and the End only 2 or 3 times and the samples once - I've been able to resist myself! ;D I want the album to sound as fresh as possible when it's finally released

Yeah, you have a very good point with your argument. The members who had a heavier influence aren't really there anymore, and if we look at how Anathema has evolved, adding a heavier touch would almost be like regressing in sound. It's interesting if we compare PT and Anathema, because PT started out more soft, and their last couple of albums have been much more heavy sounding, meanwhile Anathema is pretty much the opposite. Anathema now is very uplifting, atmospheric and positive, and I have no idea how they could incorporate heavier riffs into that, I don't really know if heaviness would work with atmospheric/positive/uplifting.

There were traces of heaviness on "We're Here" Such as Summernight Horizon, or Simple Mistake, but that of course is instrument heaviness and nothing like A Dying Wish.

Also Untouchable Pt. 1 seriously needs to go viral. It's happened with much worse songs before...

I'd prefer if there were less prominent female vocals on this album, but it's still absolutely amazing. Lightning Song is very uplifting and powerful, but I'd love to see how it sounds with male vocals as well.

Also: the end of The Storm Before the Calm is incredible.

I really like the female vocals on the album, on my first listen I was surprised there was so much but I think it suits the album well  :)

After 10 spins of this album, I can easily say it's the best album I've heard so far this year. I don't know if it surpasses WHBWH, but it's right there with it.

On my third listen of the album now, pretty good. First listen was a bit of a let down actually, possibly because of high expectations, but it didn't blow me away in the same way that WHBWH did on the first listen. But it has grown with each listen, and I can definitely see potential in the album. I'm already starting to really dig it on this listen, which is good.

As for how it ranks into the albums I know so far this year, I would say that it is probably just below or tied with Gazpacho - March of Ghosts for AOTY so far.

It's definitely the 'Dreaming Light' of this album.  :)

Still not a big fan of Sunlight or Lost Child. For that reason I'd have to say WHBWH is the better album.

Still a solid record, though.

I want to take a deep dive into this band, where shall I start?
I do not prefer to start with their doom/gothic stuff.

I don't quite get the fuzz over Lightning Song so far, but again I've only heard the album 3 times so far. On the other hand, Dreaming Light isn't one of my favorites on WHBWH either, so I guess different opinions exist.
I'd say Lost Child and the Untouchable-songs are my favorites so far.

I've listened to the new album 12 times so far. I think I may like it just as much as WHBWH, if not a little more. Lightening Song is definitely my favorite. I can't stop listening to it.

I'd have thought for someone who loves female vocalists so much, you'd be ecstatic over a song like this. It's just utterly uplifting, happy, powerful, inspiring... the list goes on, haha.

Yup, it's amazing. I'm currently in love with the second half of the Storm Before the Calm. So good.

Weather Systems is one of the most unbelievably moving and uplifiting albums I've ever heard. It might....might be even Better than We're Here. That hurt to say. Lightning Song, Untouchable, and oh my god Internal Landscapes.....

WS is absolutely glorious but I've been on an Anathema kick and seriously listening to A Natural Disaster, Pulled Under at 2000 Metres a Second and Closer clicked hard with me. Closer just has a creepy yet awesome atmospheric feeling to it, and the other, well...

PULLED UNDER AT 2000 METRES A SECOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOND

Pulled Under... is great, but not one of my favorites on the album. I can understand why it wouldn't be one of Danny's favorites.

Weather Systems is great, but I don't think it's my AOTY now, and looking at some of the releases later this year, it might be hard for it to end up in the top5/10-region.

I think you just need some more time with the album, it's as good as WHBWH in my opinion, after like 15+ listens.

To be fair I've heard it 9 times now, and I still think it's a bit underwhelming. It's impossible not to compare it to WHBWH (for obvious reasons) and I don't feel like any of the songs on Weather Systems are good enough to be placed on WHBWH. Maybe the Untouchable-songs, but while the rest on Weather Systems is great, I don't think any of the songs are Universal/Hindsight/Thin Air-awesome.
