After the initial indifference to the album I decided to check it out again at work the other day. Put on the headphones, got the lyrics out and surprisingly almost every song started to mean something to me. Right now, Get Off, Get Out is the only one I can say that I dislike to some extent.
I don't know if it's just the distance I took from the band and their music since they released the album or just because I could finally interpret the music and part of the lyrics in my own way that made the songs a lot more personal to me, something that has happened right off the bat with their previous work. I can certainly see how this could attract new listeners, it is a lot more fresh and maybe the more optimistic nature of the songs helps a lot but underneath you can still hear the old Anathema.
Still, I wouldn't rate it above anything in they released between 1998-2003 but right now I would still give it a 5/5 star rating. Thin Air and especially the songs from Everything to Simple Mistake are some of their absolute best. Universal is awesome as well and Hindsight is the perfect closer for this album.
I'm so glad this happened, I hated the thought of not liking Anathema's music.
