well the mother came got her at the end, so she was very close by. maybe she was getting coffee on the next block and realized her kid went missing but couldn't find her because everyone in the area failed to mention that she was fucking hemorrhaging into the gutter around the corner.

The law right now in China means that many victims of traffic accidents, or people who have fallen ill in the street have actually successfully sued the people that helped them for sums of money that could easily destroy lives, even if there is no evidence that they are the ones that caused the accident (because they were not). In a country that executes more than any other, I wonder how willing you would be to potentially implicate yourself in a crime by helping a stranger. Yes, its very sad. But I, for one, find it hard to blame them in this situation. The law needs to change before people can become less suspicious.

I thought I heard somewhere or someplace that the poor girl died.  But I cannot seem to find that info.  Considering the severity of her injuries, that could be a blessing.  No more suffering and pain.

Not exactly the same thing, but a few years ago my cousin was driving down a busy street in Detroit and hit a three-year-old kid.  She was standing in the median for some reason, and he saw her, but she decided to make a run for it right in front of my cousin's car.  In Michigan, the law pretty much always sides against the driver if they hit a pedestrian, so he got the ticket, which would've put him on the hook for the kid's medical expenses and all that, plus vehicular manslaughter if she died.

The parents were nowhere to be found, so my cousin got a lawyer and fought the ticket on the grounds of "what was a three-year-old kid doing in the middle of Woodward Avenue in the first place, and where the fuck were her parents?"  He won.  Also, the kid was fine (she "bounced" off the front of his car back onto the median but was otherwise unhurt).

What makes people think the world becoming worse when they see horrific news?  How do these things indicate humanity is crueler than 10 years ago?  100 years?  1000 years?  History certainly doesn't paint a rosy picture for humanity.

I was going to post the first myself.

We learned about a case in psychology where a woman was raped and stabbed to death or something like that, on a quiet night in the middle of a suburban street. She screamed her lungs out for half an hour. No-one called the cops; when they investigated the next morning, they found no-one had even got up to see what was happening. Everyone had figured someone else would act. Everyone had rolled over and put their pillow over their head.

edit: forget it, the story's actually linked in the article, and I had some details wrong. It's been a while. (Or maybe they taught it for more effect.)
