Systematic Chaos vs Black Clouds
« on: October 13, 2011, 05:00:18 PM »
I feel like SC is starting to age postively for the community, but BCSL is not.  Where are we at now? How do they compare?

To me, they both have some really solid parts.  I think that BCSL definitely has better individual moments than SC (end of TCOT, intro to ANTR, Beautiful Agony, JP solo in TSF) but all of BCSL's songs have some issues, such as being too long or including pointless instrumental duels.  SC, on the other hand, has some solid, solid songs that I can't find issues with (ITPOE, CM, Forsaken).

Right now, I'm voting "tied" because I really can't decide.

My vote goes for BC&SL. Both albums are not perfect, but SC is less perfect... it has some great moments like JP solo in TMOLS, but BC&SL is just better.

Looks like people still really hate SC! :lol

BC&SL for me, SC has to many weak points for me, still good album but BC&SC feels much more solid to me.

I've always preferred Systematic Chaos.

Both have 2 awesome songs - ITPOE (counting it as 1) & TMOLS on Systematic Chaos and ANTR & TCOT on Black Clouds. I prefer ITPOE to TCOT and TMOLS to ANTR.

Plus, aside from those 2 songs on Black Clouds, I find the rest of the album pretty weak except parts of TSF. The only song I really dislike on SC is Repentance.

BCaSL. SC is very near the bottom of my DT list.

Systematic Chaos is the worst DT album. BC&SL is in the top 5. BC&SL.

Black Clouds, though my opinion of the album has dropped significantly over time. It's got parts of songs that are good, like the first half of ANTR and the beginning/ending of TBOT, and it's got two very high quality songs: TCOT and TSF. A Rite of Passage and Wither aren't all too bad, either.

Systematic Chaos may have ITPOE, Repentance, and The Dark Eternal Night, but the only one of those that beats the high points of BC&SL is ITPOE, and the low points of SC are almost as bad as FII's lows.

Systematic Chaos. Sure Black Clouds has The Count and The Shattered Fortress, but Systematic Chaos' only major flaw is PoW. Both are still bottom feeders.

I don't see that at all.  It seems like the vast majority still considers it one of their two or three least best albums, and definitely one of the two least best albums of the Rudess era.

It's okay to use the word "worst".

Unless it doesn't apply.

It does. "Least best" is what "worst" means. Meanwhile, "least best" is itself a rather nonsensical (and utterly ungrammatical) contradiction.

It does. "Least best" is what "worst" means.

Technically true, but 'worst' has a connotation of 'bad'.  If a person likes all the DT albums, they might want to avoid that negative connotation.  The real question is, why do you care?

Anyway, I'm actually going with Systematic Chaos on this one.  For a long time I would have said BC&SL, but SC has been growing on me lately.   Plus, BC&SL has two of the least best (;)) Dream Theater songs.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

Worst implies bad; least best implies that something is still good, but simply not as good as everything else.  In short, it sounds nicer.  :)

BC&SL - It gets more play from me than SC does lately, despite having AROP.

I will say, though, that SC has aged well with me, but I still prefer BC&SL over it.

Tough call for me. They both have their incredible moments, and they both have their weaker points. SC has CM and TDEN which are both top songs for me, but BCASL has ANTR and TCOT which are also top songs.
I think I'll vote with SC for consistency though. I like more songs on SC than from BCASL.

Both are underrated though, especially SC. Of course I mean here. They seem to be quite liked by the general fanbase when you see them live. :tup

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I'm just gonna stop arguing with you about anything DT related because that sentence alone proves there will never be any common ground for agreement.

Somehow, though, I'm also voting them as a tie. For completely different reasons.
