What gear do YOU play?
« on: October 05, 2011, 11:29:31 AM »
Hey guys.  I've been playing guitar for over 15 years and I'm considering opening my own music store.  I would be selling in house, as well as online domestically and internationally.  Since I know DT has fans all around the world, and many fans that are musicians, I would like to know what gear you play or are a fan of (brands, models, etc).  I'm not soliciting or anything, just doing a little research to see what's trending amongst musicians.  Thanks everyone!

I'm not sure if going into selling music gear is a good business venture in this day and age.  Guitar center has enough trouble selling instruments.  Most of their money is made on stupid items like cables and then their electronics dept for DJs and stuff like that.

The only way I could see you being able to do the music shop thing is to be a boutique store and sell rare, or very high end type stuff.
If anyone in this thread judge him; heyy James WTF? about you in Awake In Japan? Then I will say; WTF about you silly?

Actually it would be buying into a business that's already established.  It's a local pawn shop/music store that's been in business for over 20 years, but about a year ago they expanded to online retail.  Now, the store does 99% of their business online and does about $400K a month in sales, just online.  They already have several major brands (ESP, Roland/Boss, Fender, Electro Harmonix, etc) and I'm just looking to expand.  Since it's pretty much all online, there's VERY little overhead.  I agree with everything you're saying however, but this looks to be a very good investment.

Hm interesting.  Well what would the benefit be of me buying from this store as opposed to AMS or Musicians Friend or Guitar Center's websites?  I already know that I'll get the lowest price from those 3 because of price match guarentees.

Ehh...not really.  Check ebay's online retailers.  Like....an ESP EC-1000 for example......that's all I can really say.  :)

Well I checked and I don't see anything that shocks me regarding prices.  Seeing a lot of B stock stuff and a few of the ESP EC-1000 models that are older models.  Musicians friend also gives you 60 day return policy.

All I'm saying is I would rather buy from a company I trust regarding new equipment.  Used equipment is another story though.

I never have and I never will buy an instrument online.  I've been a guitar player since 1978 and I've owned a lot of guitars - every single one of them, with the exception of my Les Paul that my wife bought me (the first, only and last time she's ever done something like that  :lol ) I purchased in person, at the music store, where I could play them, feel them, examine them closely.

I don't know if that's helpful to you, but, well, there it is.

Now other gear I would buy online and have bought online.  My Carvin MTS3200 amplifier, for example.  I played through one at a gig, and liked it so much that I went on their website the next day about bought one.  Same goes for most of my recording rig.  Purchased it all online after using it in a pro studio.

Well, about your original post Marion...

Among the common stuff I have; a Fender bass and guitar, an ESP and an Ibanez guitar, Ovation 12 string. I have an Ampeg bass cabinet. So those are the standards I suppose, that any store really I have been in carry.

I did buy a 6 string bass from rondomusic.com, which kind of undercuts music stores.

As far what gear I am a fan off, Mesa/Boogie guitar amps (this is extremely common among DT fans). Fractal Audio is a new player in guitar amps as well.

Jackson guitars... Love 'em. Had loads of different brands over the years but always go back to the Jackson guitars. Im fed up of music stores only stocking the cheapest range of Jacksons though, stores need to stock more mid to top of the range Jackson stuff. (this is in reference to UK stores)

Schecter guitars and Line 6 amplifiers.

I buy whatever strings I feel like trying out at the time I'm at the store. Same usually goes for picks, but I tend to stick with Dunlops.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I don't hold any special allegiance to a particular maker. But my main guitar is a Jackson and I have a Crate tube amp (Stealth, they don't make em anymore), and various pedals.
