Facebook Timeline
« on: October 04, 2011, 05:50:42 PM »
Hey Guys, I'm not sure if there is a topic discussing this yet, but anyways I just switched to facebook Timeline layout view. It's a pretty cool thing actually. definitely a different thing for facebook, and it doesn't make the experience of facebook less enjoyable (such as previous updates have) I really like the look of it.

Here is some pictures of my profile :)

Here is also a link to the page about Timeline: https://www.facebook.com/about/timeline

whatya guys think?

Except much, much more organized. And way less do-it-yourself HTML.

This should be a change that people should actually embrace.  It's not bad.

Looks like a useless change to me, but there's nothing here I will dislike. The profile page isn't something I ever use, so they can do what they want to it.
I still wish they'd just put the news feed back to how it was. Now it's just a clusterfuck of random crap it arbitrarily decides it wants to show me in whatever order it feels like.

At least they made an attempt to fix that by adding a link at the top of the page that takes you straight to the most recent posts.

I really like the timeline. It seems fresh, and I think it does a good job with making it easier to find stuff from the past. It makes my newsfeed seem boring and outdated as he'll now though. Thats due for a serious overhaul sometime soon. I don't like how the new newsfeed puts the most interesting things on top now. That feature really irks me.

Oh, how you were wrong! :lol

I personally like it since it finally makes cleaning up your account reasonable.  The amount of crap this is getting for organizing content already accessible, albeit tediously, on your page is amusing.

I still haven't gotten it and likely won't unless it becomes mandatory.

It seems like there's an even 50/50 split on my friends list concerning who has it and who doesn't.

Timeline is horrible. It's a clunky way of presenting information that was much better organized before. Now it's cluttered and disorganized, and slower to load. I dread the day they force me to "upgrade" to it.

I still don't like the two-column format.  It just seems dumb to have to jump back and forth between the two sides.  And yes, I "have" to because I'm anal that way and if I'm going to read something organized chronologically, I have to read it in order.

I like being able to personalize things just a bit with the Cover Photo, without things getting out of control a la MySpace.

There is no trying.  Once you change you cannot go back.  You basically get a 1 week period to clean up your profile if you want.

Anyway, I will never, ever, ever, ever change to that layout, until Facebook forces me. It's messy, and why would I like anyone to see what I wrote two years ago anyway?

The never ending Facebook cycle:

1. Facebook changes its layout
2. People moan about how there was nothing wrong with how Facebook looked "SO WHY DID THEY CHANGE IT?"
3. People get used to it and decide they actually like it
4. Layout stays the same for about a year
5. Loop back to 1

If someone really wanted that information on you, they could get it without Timeline.  It's there, it's just cumbersome to get.  Timeline makes the whole process of controlling your content easy.  It's a major step forward in privacy control.  The problem isn't Timeline making it accessible, it's that anyone installing it has years of backlog of reviewing content to do.

The never ending Facebook cycle:

2. People moan about how there was nothing wrong with how Facebook looked "SO WHY DID THEY CHANGE IT?"
3. People stop complaining because they know they're stuck with it and FB doesn't listen anyway
4. Layout stays the same for about a year
5. Loop back to 1

FTFY.
It's not always just people complaining because it's different.
Luckily they actually listened last time they made a ridiculously stupid change, and added the option back in to sort your wall posts by most recent instead of whatever that other awful thing was where everything is grouped randomly.
The timeline feature has been around for a while now for those who have wanted to try it, and I still think it's bad, and that won't change over time. It just won't serve any purpose to complain about it anymore, because we'll be stuck with it. But it will still be just as bad as it was when it was first introduced.
I don't know what made them think that putting the wall posts in two columns would be an improvement over 1 column. It's an unreadable messy layout that is impossible to read. Aside from that, most of the changes I can live with.

I hate it.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

I wonder if they're not making it mandatory to see how well people like it and to see if they should make it mandatory. Like "if only a quarter switch over, maybe we'll keep it as a choice instead of converting everyone."

I personally think it is very bloated and unorganized. It's a good idea if you don't care that anyone can access your info easier. True, you can always deactivate your facebook, but to make stalking more convenient isn't good either.

Once you've switched to Timeline, can you switch back though? Otherwise it wouldn't be a very good indicator.
I'm thinking they're leaving it as an option for a while to phase it in as gradually as possible. If they force it on people, they'll all complain at once. But if they do it gradually, people will be more interested because they'll have the choice.
