Best concept album of all time?
« on: October 02, 2011, 05:32:52 PM »
I couldn't find any thread where this discussion could belong... so here it is! The title pretty much says it all.

My favorites-
Scenes From a Memory- DT
The Human Equation- Ayreon
Queensryche- Operation Mindcrime
Pink Floyd- The Wall

Feel free to add on to this and discuss

I personally love SFAM better than anything.   But not even I can come up with any other answer besides The Wall.    I like SFAM better than The Wall and I still say The Wall is the greatest concept album of all time.  :hefdaddy

Mindcrime is my favorite album of all time.  As far as the concept goes, I guess it's kind of cheesy, but in a good way.

Tommy and Quadrophenia say hi  :lol

Though to be honest, my favorite concept album is Misplaced Childhood. The recurring musical motifs in that album are stellar.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

Favorite is one thing.  "Best" is another.

The Wall is the best them.  It stands the test of time better than Tommy, Quadrophenia or The Lamb.  I defy to name one band that wrote a true concept album, and couldn't say that the Wall had influenced them in some way shape or form.

Well to be fair (though I'm sure H agrees with that post for other reasons), for this topic that might be a legitimate distinction depending on how you define 'concept album'. Like, I'd say that The Ichthyologist is better than The Perfect Element, but TPE executes the 'concept' part of that much more effectively.

Actually, I think I agree with your post.  It ties back to what we were saying earlier, that one thing can only be "better" than another if we identify a purpose --- presenting a concept, in this case.

I have to agree that I think "best" and "favorite" are two different things.
On the other hand, I don't think the word "best" exists in the world of music, because opinions are subjective, but I could never say that an album is "the best album", but I could say that it is "my favorite album".

The word "best" implies objectivity, which there isn't, so no.

The word "best" implies objectivity

Since when?  "Best" is inherently a value judgement, and therefore most often used in assessments of subjective superiority.  Off the top of my head, I can't even think of an example of anyone using "best" in an objective manner, while I could easily rattle off hundreds, if not thousands, of subjective "bests".

Wha....? I dont even....wait what?

I don't understand why the confusion.   My favorite concept album is not the same as what is (IMO) "the best" concept album.   Nor is "the best" my favorite.

My personal favorite concept album is probably SFAM.    But I think The Wall is a "better" concept album.   So why isn't The Wall my favorite?   Mostly because I'm completely burned out on it.    I went through a period in my life where I listened to The Wall at least 3-4 times a day, every single day for 6 solid months.    NO concept album....in fact, no album period... has ever had that effect on me.   Not before, not since.   I still think it's one of the most amazing albums ever in the history of mankind.   I can practically recite it note for note inside my head.   I don't know if I can even do that with a Dream Theater album.    But as of right now, I havn't listened to it in 3-4 years, and I suspect I won't hear it again in the near future.    Been there...done that.   But no album has ever resonated with me the way The Wall did.

Thus....it is not my favorite...but I think it's the greatest.

I would add...that sometimes a person is able to separate "artistic merit" (which is *still* subjective) from personal preference.

For example.  If I were given the choice between listening to Kix's album "Midnight Dynamite" and and Extreme's "Pornograffiti"....my personal preference would choose the Kix album...but I would recognize the Extreme album as being a "better" album from a purely artistic standpoint.   Kix is simply not as talented as Nuno and the boys...but I still like the Kix album better.

Thus, the Kix album is my favorite of the two...but the Extreme album is "the best" of the two.

DT - SFAM
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Opeth - Still Life
Seventh Wonder - Mercy Falls
The Dear Hunter - Act II
Coheed and Cambria - all of their albums

Ah good to see someone who appreciates Still Life.

I don't have an all time favorite concept album but there's a few that jump in my mind.

Mudvayne: LD 50
Pearl Jam: Vitalogy
Opeth: Damnation
Thrice: Artist in the Ambulance
BTBAM: Alaska
Tool: Lateralus
Metallica: AJFA
DT: ADTOE
The Number 12 Looks Like You: Mongrel

There's many more but these are the ones that jumped in my head.

But "best" and "favorite" are both subjective aren't they? So whatever one you think is the best is your favorite. "The Wall" used to be ure favorite but now you are burned out on it so SFAM is now ure favorite. So ure favorite is subject to change. It doesnt matter though.

My favorite concept album is "The Hours That Remain" by Mercenary but it does change sometimes.
