I know SW is not everyone's cup of tea, but he is easily my favorite musician ever. Everything the guy puts out (and he puts out a ton of music each year) is simply amazing to me.

Second favorite would probably be Lindsey Buckingham.

If were talking about amount of content I must once again mention Townsend.

14 solo albums and 5 albums with Strapping Young Lad. Then theres the live releases, compilations, guest work and his work as a producer.

Welcome to My DNA, The Incident, Insurgentes, Grace for Drowning, various unreleased shit...

That's a lot of music. GFD is over 80 minutes plus extras, The Incident is 75, Insurgentes was only about an hour but had a ton of other songs from those sessions...

He wrote 1 song on Welcome to My DNA.

The 2 albums I'm talking about are GFD and The Incident. (Insurgentes was 2008)

Blackfield - Welcome to My DNA
PT - The Incident
SW - Insurgentes (though that might count as 4 years)
SW - Grace For Drowning
BC - Chiaroscuro
BC - Litany
No-Man - Wherever There is Light

Probably something more I forgot about.
Still quite a few releases. :)

His playing/singing on Blackfield still counts Ryan.  :P

Quote from SW's facebook page: "HI all - I think some of you started to get your copies of Grace For Drowning today, and the next few days will bring most of you your copies, so I just want to say a big thank you for the interest, and I really hope you enjoy this musical journey. Despite my reputation for being prolific, this is actually my first album of new material since The Incident (until now only 2 new songs in 2 years - and one of them was actually an old song, yup I'm slowing down!), so I've been developing and living with the material on this album for a long time, and am really happy to see it finally "born" into the world."

Who cares about what he says himself?
He has released X amount of releases, if he has already forgotten about them himself, that still doesn't change the fact that he has released them.

Not to mention that it's STILL a lot of music. Most musicians put out maybe one album every year or two. SW typically has a couple projects going on around the same time. And his albums are all usually pretty lengthy, so he has put out a LOT of music. I wasn't saying he does Zappa levels of productivity, but it is still impressive.

This thread getting this far without mentioning Paul McCartney makes me

I really don't think Neal Morse or Steven Wilson can be called the greatest.  Most of their stuff is good but they have quite a lot of average songs.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. I'm wondering the same thing.  Who cares if SW didn't release any new material between The Incident and GFD (outside of writing one song on the new Blackfield)?

By the way, I THINK my answer is Steven Wilson.

I change my answer.

Derek Sherinian is the greatest single musician ever.

Emphasis on "single."

I haven't heard too much of hismaterial but based on everything I know about the guy I'd have to go with Frank Zappa too.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

My favorites are Kerry Livgren and Neal Morse, but I can't really call them the greatest. I think some people UNDERRATE classical composers. Steven Wilson is greater than Beethoven? You also have to look at a musician's influence and how long their music will endure.
WHOA, NICE GRAPHICS!
