Can't view the link right now, but there is a section of Magnum Opus that's very similar to part of Metropolis.

Heh, that's EXACTLY what I thought the first time I heard "Magnum Opus". Sounded just like a DT instrumental to me.

Magnum Opus in particular was a song that Kansas pieced together from a bunch of unrelated, leftover ideas, and Dream Theater have certainly been guilty of writing songs that seem that way.

Sounds to me like that pieced together "leftoverature" started something really, really good! Could this song have been the subconcious unknowing birth of prog metal? Let the debate begin.....

I`ve been telling friends interested in DT to check out Kansas for years! "Magnum Opus" in particular seems like something DT could easily have done.

That's understandable.  "Closet Chronicles" is certainly up there in the annals of greatness regarding Kansas' discography, but the very definition of "Magnum Opus" completely dope-slaps the rest of the catalog into submission.   :P

I always have viewed Kansas, since they weren't afraid to have harder rocking guitars in their sound, to be one of the earliest influences on what wound up growing into progressive metal. Sure, Rush was the most obvious influence, but Kansas wasn't afraid to blend hard rock and progressive rock either. Amazes me how many prog fans I know who haven't heard Song For America or Masque. Kansas rocks :D

You may think some of them sound that way, but one song that was definitely pieced together from unrelated leftover ideas was Erotomania. Not sure if there were any others like that, tho I 'spose Raw Dog was too.

Speaking of DT-like Kansas songs, Lightning's Hand just came to mind as a possibility. It has some pretty intense instrumental sections and a bit more of a "metal" style than most of their work. It's also perhaps one of the most under-appreciated songs in their catalog. I hardly ever see it mentioned.

Kansas rules (my second favorite band), and they definitely influenced DT. The most obvious for me is the SDOIT/The Wall connection.

I've often wondered why DT doesn't cite Kansas as more of an influence. They like to say they're a cross between Metallica and Yes, but to me they sound more like a cross between Kansas and Iron Maiden...

I seem to recall JP and MP talking about being big Kansas fans. I'm also pretty sure that they said that Chis Cintron had a more Steve Walsh voice and that they dug it. That is until LaBrie showed up.
