Just saw the Drag Ropes video, and that was amazing. The video portrays the emotion in the music, haunting evil sadness, it was perfect. Think I'll listen to the album now.

It is growing on me however it won't be something that I listen too often, it'll have to be something I'm in the mood for.

Not a fan of Drag Ropes. The title track is amazing. Haven't listen to the rest enough yet.

Drag Ropes is meh.

I think I'm destined to not like this, considering I didn't like Heritage and more or less can't stand Steven Wilson.

Listened to the album six times so far; still feel like it has quite a bit more to grow on me, and it gets better every time.

I feel the same and have listened to it about the same amount of times I think. I love every single second of it, especially Hag and the title track. But it does still have some room to grow, for sure.

At the risk of sounding like a bigger fanboy than I already am, I have to admit this might be one of the best things either artist have ever done.

So far I'm definitely getting a "love it or hate it" kind of vibe from the comments here. :) I love both PT and Opeth, but I also dig experimental/ambient/avant garde music (been on a bit of a post-rock kick lately) and this sounds like it might be right up my alley. Waiting to listen to it until it arrives next week.

I'm not really surprised by the reactions. This is a DT-forum, and most (if not all) people here were drawn here for the love in Progressive music. I know there are several people here in GMD that likes more experimental music, but there's still people who mainly listens to progressive and doesn't like experimental stuff. :P
It's logical really.

There is this verse in Hag that is sickeningly awesome; it's so dark and eerie. But there is a line in it that I cannot sound out and it's killin' me. Help, sensitive, developed ear friends!

I think it goes:

Corner of the church yard
You twisted up my future
My useless dog
???(incarcerate 'n dread now?)???
You separate the heart and you'll lose me
You hag

Anyone that can help is thanked infinitely and gets a net french kiss.

For those who have listened to the album, how is the sound quality? I was reading somewhere that the production was sub-par compared to other past works and on the video for Drag Ropes, I found the mix to be a little off-putting (then again its YouTube so the quality isn't always great!) For example, right when Akerfeldt's verse comes in, the string orchestra drops really low in the mix which to me sounded a little un-polished and noticeable.

Regardless I cannot wait till the baby drops in my mailbox next week! :metal

The mix on Drag Ropes is great judging from the youtube version. It's obvious that the production is going to be different from their previous output considering it's... well, different.

I can't wait to hear how this sounds on a good system once my CD arrives.

Also, is anyone else not that fond of Ljudet Innan?  I mean, it is not a bad song, but it is the one I would call boring and just kind of there.  Fortunately, the other five tunes are all aces. :tup :tup

Everything about the album is amazing, including the video. The only thing that bugs me is the awkward transitions between songs. It seems like some songs (like Lock Howl off the top of my head), just stop. Hopefully they flow together smoothly on the CD.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Ya know, someone really needs to tell musicians everywhere that abruptly ending songs like that isn't original or clever anymore (if it ever was); it is annoying.  Granted, if that is what their creative vision dictates, then so be it, but those kind of endings are almost always annoying.  I still dig Lock Howl, but wish the song had an actual end to it.  Oh well, I can always edit it in Audacity and fade out the last 15 seconds for my mp3 of it. :)

Just got my copy today. After a couple listens through, I'm really enjoying the feel of this album. It definitely has a feel to it similar to Heritage. 2 great musicians, working together to make a great album. What more could an audiophile like myself ask for?

The ending of Lock Howl pisses me off! That's my favorite song. Mikael said that all the songs were over 10 minutes long. I wonder why they truncated Lock Howl. By the way, anyone played Age Of Empires II? That song reminds me of the soundtrack.

Listened to it twice so far. I really like it but its not a masterpiece, just a really good album. Its pretty much what I expected and I'm satisfied. I'd say the standouts for me are Storm Corrosion, Lock Howl, and Ljudet Innan. This will be a really cool album to play late at night.

Got this in while I was away the past two days, but it'll take 2nd billing to the new Arjen CD I got at RoSfest, still psyched to hear it and see which side of the seeming big divide I fall on.
