Very sad.  :(

REM were my first "favourite" band back when they released " The One I Love ".

Out Of Time was the first album I ever owned ( on cassette ) and Automatic For The People is just classic.

I got to see them on the Monster tour in 1995 before Bill Berry quit the band.

Been a strong supporter ever since, even through the rocky Around The Sun period.

*Loved* Collapse Into Now. Thought it was their best album since Out Of Time.

Goodbye Berry,Buck,Mills & Stipe. I will miss you.  :-[

One of the bands I didn't "get" at first.  I owed that to being a dumb, teenage metalhead that lived in a musical shell.  Tastes evolved and they became more and more prominent in my music listening menu.  Not just me, my friends have gotten to listening to them as well.

It was a great run.  Thanks for the music, guys!

Sad day! I love R.E.M. to death.

SO IT'S YOUR FAULT. YOU LOVED THEM TOO MUCH, AND NOW LOOK WHAT YOU DID?

I actually didn't even know these guys were still around.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

The new album is brilliant. Really a return to form. We should at least be thankful they split up after two good albums back-to-back instead of after Around The Sun, which would have been even more of a downer.

Wowsers, I'm actually tearing up as I listen to Nightswimming in memorial, such a beautiful song and I can't even tell if this is sadness or tears of joy. Very awkard and the keys on my board are getting blurrier with each sentence of this post. I never fully delved into them but loved certain tracks of theirs and generally found their music quite charming.

Best of wishes in their future endeavors.

Sad for all of the fans  :'(. On a personal note I'm actually happier the fewer depressing bands (musically they're not exactly uplifting IMO) are out there, I'm depressed enough as it is...

This cracked me up :lol I don't dislike Radiohead enough to wish that on them though

Y'all do realize though that this will only pave the way for a reunion/signing to Roadrunner right?

Really liked Losing My Religion and The One I Love when I was younger. Both are still good songs. Stopped caring after that.

No thanks!

Sad about REM though, they've been around a looong time. Kind of saw it coming though.

Automatic For The People is one of my all time favourite albums.

He said instead of REM.  I would easily take that trade.

Also to someone who said they are depressing,  they have mostly uplifting music I believe.

Out of Time is better than Automatic for the People? Huh?

For non-R.E.M. fans: This is like someone saying A Dramatic Turn of Events is Dream Theater's best album since When Dram and Day Unite. :lol

I don't know their discography that well to be honest, my dad used to play their "In Time: best of"-album a lot when I was younger, and I still listen to it for nostalgic reasons.
I know it's a collection, but man what a collection it is.  :hefdaddy

I have been praying for this day...since they first got popular.
Fuck these fuck lame ass excuses for music makers!!!!

For me.....being forced to listen to ANY r.e.m song was akin to puking in my mouth....and having to swallow it back down.

no sarcasm here.

I'd rather see a band end like this, than with a nasty breakup or uninspired records that are merely a way of prying money from people's pockets.  Sometimes there just isn't anything else to be said.  Everything has to end at some point, and they retired on their own terms in a dignified manner - I couldn't ask for anything else as a fan.

TOX - you have to remember that Out of Time was their breakthrough album, so many people are going to think it's their best album for that reason.  Music charts would also suggest that the general populace thinks OoT > AftP.

Since blatantly insulting you would be against forum rules, I'll just say that this post makes you look like a gigantic douche.

Sad day.  I actually own their latest and it's pretty damn good.  My father's been following them since the very beginning though.
