Place your bets -- ADToE Tour setlist opener
« on: September 21, 2011, 09:41:58 AM »
The U.S. tour is upon us. What do you think will open the show and why?

I'm going with Bridges in the Sky.

The song has a build-up opening that is perfectly suited to be an opening song.

What do you guys think?

I gotta say "On the Backs of Angels."  I view Bridges as more of a climax song for the concert accompanied by creative video work by Blob that brings the album artwork to life, not really the tune to kick off the show.  But it would still be a good starter if if was chosen.

I think  James LaBrie already hinted in an interview that Bridges in the Sky is likely to be the opener

I think he said it would work well as an opener.

I guess we'll find out soon!

I think OTBOA will be the opener.
It opens a new chapter and I would like to hear it first live.
Maybe with more longer intro  :metal  :corn

I think OTBOA.

First song off the album, good opener, the song has been around and we just recently got a video too. I just have this feeling that it will be the opener.

Definitely this, it's a closing song or pre-encore song.

I would acutally be slightly suprised if they didn't open with On the Backs of Angels, to be honest. I think the clean guitar opening of OTBOA would send chills down my spine, and get me totally jacked for the show. I definitely want to see Bridges in the Sky, however it's  currently my favorite off the album, so if that was played first, although I would be happy, I'd have a feeling as though I'd already shot my wad.

Also as someone else said, OTBOA was our first exposure to the new era of DT, so it seems like it's naturally suited for that "first" spot.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I really feel Bridges would be the Ideal opener because of the atmosphere in the intro, which can be extended.  I get chills thinking of the crowd all pumped up for the first song of the evening, singing along to probably the best DT chorus, since maybe Home or Finally Free in SFAM.

I feel the optimal closer is definately Illusions because of that seriously mindblowing ending.

I think you may be right.  Its either going to be that one or "On The Backs of Angels"  I just wonder if they might think that the throat singing thing might be a bit too unconventional to open with....

LNF.  Keep in mind that they've used it's counterpart to open several tours in the past.

Although it is best suited as an either an encore or 'late' set song, I love the opening guitar/keys of 'Breaking All Illusions'. It'd be an immediate adrenaline shot and that song would definately warm up the band quickly. It'll probably be 'saved' for a treat type song.
I'd have to agree that OTBOA is most likely to be the one although BITS does have the qualities of a good opener as well.

They need to hire an actual throat singer to dress up like a shaman and do an epic intro to BITS to open the show complete with light show, pyrotechnics, human sacrifice, etc.

My money is on Bridges in The Sky...

No wait... On The Backs of Angels..

I'll split my bet, and say that it will be either of those two.

They seem to like to open with the album opener or the single release.  Since OTBOA is both the album opener and single release, I'm gonna go with that.

If not for what James said about Lost Not Forgotten being a good opener, my money would be on OTBOA for that very same reason.  You're right; that's what they've done for the longest time now, with a few exceptions.  And I suppose it makes sense.  They are a band that usually structures their albums such that the album openers are good concert openers.  And I guess they rightly figure that it doesn't matter that it's new.  Probably the vast majority of people in the audience who are fans enough to come to their show either likes them well enough to have the new album and know the material, or got dragged there by a friend and doesn't know any of their material, so won't really care.  :lol

Off topic, I remember Transatlantic opening their shows on the last tour with their album opener as well.  80 minutes and an intermission later, they were ready for song #2.  :lol

I'd say OTBOA is an easy pick...still dreaming they're gonnaplay the whole damn album...

But I'd love to have them open with Overture 1928/Strange deja-vu LOL

It's going to be OTBOA, because there has been only one tour in the last decade or so in which the album opener wasn't the concert opener.  That was Systematic Chaos, and they even opened with ITPOE 1 on a handful of the PN shows.
