Which is the best album opener?
« on: September 20, 2011, 07:05:09 PM »
Sorry if this has already been discussed, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case...

However, I don't see any recent threads and I thought it would be interesting to see how the voting played out including OTBOA.

My choice is probably going to be a bit controversial: 6:00

If I would have to rank them it would probably be followed something like this...

2. OTBOA
3. Pull Me Under

4. ANTR
5. As I Am
6. A Fortune in Lies

7. The Root of All Evil
8. Regression

9. New Millennium
10. Glass Prison

11. ITPOE pt. 1

Out of all the DT albums I've bought, the openers that grabbed me most immediately were 6:00 and ITPOE Pt1.
It's the Internet.  Everything everybody says, no matter how factual-sounding, is opinion.

Hard to go against PMU given that it got me into the band, but Glass Prison is the best of those songs, and that riff when it gets going is just godly.  I love ITPOE, but I hate that they split it in two and it feels better to me as an album closer.  OTBOA is probably 2nd or 3rd on the list for me - it's that good.

You really should have just made Overature 1928 the option, not Regression lol.

The rest of the songs are pretty good openers but The Glass Prison is one of the best songs in DTs catalog overall. Second is a tie between ANTR, PMU, and 6:00

I ended up choosing The Glass Prison with 6:00 being a close second. TGP is just such a killer song....freakin' love that song.

A Nightmare to Remember. Great song overall, and it opens the album in a monumental way like no other DT opener.

best overall song opener...TGP

Best single isolated moment opener...PMU.  Will always be biased because those opening notes were the first thing I ever heard from DT...and of course was hooked immediately  ;D

I had to vote for PMU.

Controversial Opinion - OTBOA

I know, it's pretty new, and to be honest, I might have said ANTR when BC&SL came out, but OTBOA does 2 things for me - It sets the mood and feel of the album pretty well, and you know you're in for a ride when you get into it. TGP was a VERY close second, and I absolutely LOVE it, but I have to be in that "metul  :metal" mood for it, but OTBOA just rocks on so many levels that I don't have to be in any certain mood for it. PMU would be right behind TGP, though.

"Regression" does set-up the album lyrically and conceptually, but musicially, it's just a teaser of "The Spirit Carries On" and better music is to follow it, so it doesn't stand well against the other DT openers. ANTR is pretty awesome, if a bit lengthy, so it's in the upper-middle tier of operners. "6:00" is pretty good, as is "New Millennium", but they're not so amazing compared to the rest - middle-tier material for me, and on their respective albums, aren't even highly ranked.

AFIL is pretty good, actually, and you have to admit that opening drum "DUN-DUN-DUN" is just awesome. AIA does a good job as well, and ranks highly for me - it rocks and is short enough as to not drag on forever. ITPOE pt1 is pretty good at this too, and the opening Prelude is pretty epic, as is the unison near the end of pt1. I would also have to put TROAE among these as well.

Overall, my ranking...

Awesome (5/5):
On The Backs Of Angels
Pull Me Under
The Glass Prison

Great (4/5):
As I Am
The Root Of All Evil
In The Presence Of Enemies (Part 1)
A Nightmare To Remember

Good (3/5):
A Fortune In Lies
6:00

Okay (2/5):
New Millennium
Regression

-Marc.

I didn't give it an incredible amount of thought, because it would take much too long, but I chose New Millennium. Why? I really dig the groove. It pulls me in and the way it builds makes me feel intrigued. I really enjoy that song a great deal, especially as a way to introduce an album.

The Glass Prison. Never has another DT opener so thoroughly kicked people's asses.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

AUGH don't make me choooose.

Hm... when I got into Dream Theater, I bought 4 albums at once. Awake, Six Degrees, Train of Thought, and Systematic Chaos. I remember how The Glass Prison completely floored me when I first heard it that day, and that was that stand-out even after I had heard all four by the end of the day. So I choose that.

Pull Me Under is a solid second, though.
Hire me. I'm talentless but malleable.
