World, wheel, etc. - two syllables or one?
« on: September 20, 2011, 04:30:50 PM »
I've always been under the conviction that these two words have two syllables.  Here's my defense:

world = wurr-uhld
wheel = wee-uhl

Two syllables.  QED

The natural follow-up question is, why are dictionaries so retarded?  They haven't fixed this error in ages.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

Interesting view, though I do not share it.

I can get where you're coming from, as often, they are held out really long when spoken.

Please tell me how three consonants in a row can be pronounced in a single syllable.

The way you can judge syllables is by how many times your mouth opens when you say a word. When you say wheel, your mouth stretches once into an almost smile like thing. When saying world, your mouth gets thinner and you look like a monkey.

The syllables are broken between the  consonants.

One.

You are basically taking a multi-consonant sounding word and creating additional syllables where there is only one. Like the word Strengths.  Strengths has 6 consonant sounds, but is only one syllable.

3 corn snakes, 1 boa, 1 python, 1 milk snake, 1 king snake, 1 rat snake, and a partridge in a pear tree.

If you love "H" so much, you should have married him.

It's too late for that, though, because I've got dibs on him.  As of right now.

Are you intentionally trying to troll the English language? Holy shit dude.

I can get where he's coming from.

The English language, regardless of which former (or current) British region you're from, is mind-bogglingly poorly-thought-out.

I think it's because we pronounce the 'L' as if it were a vowel.
