That is indeed what he should do, if he can. Only problem I could see is that it would beg the comparison to Planet X, and thus the comparison to Virgil Donati. And in the realm of prog fusion, I don't think he would look good in that comparison.
Again, he should polish his chops first I think. Come out as Portnoy 2.0 unexpectedly. Right now he's doing the opposite; I always said that MP is an outstanding prog drummer, but a mediocre all-metal drummer.

Maybe take a break, or do more Transatlantic. But having as many projects as he has now just doesn't seem right. He should have one primary band, and not a million like these days.

To echo what some others have said, he should work his chops back up.  Neil Peart is one of his idols; why not go that route?  Neil is constantly looking to improve improve as a drummer.  He exposes himself to different styles of music and learns to play them, ultimately incorporating new things into his "bag of tricks".  Mike has stated that he doesn't practice, doesn't try to improve his playing, and it almost sounded like bragging.  IMO that's a horrible stance for any musician to take, to actually admit to no longer seeking to improve.  It's exactly what he needs to do, and the timing is perfect for it.  He's between regular gigs.

I don't think he brags about it. I remember and interview where he was asked about it and he said he didn't practice at all. He then said he was a bad role model in that aspect and that he should start practicing again.

I'm wondering if he's going to try to form a full-time, full-concentration band, rather than just do all these various side projects. I know he was probably aiming to get away from that kind of thing for a while when leaving DT, but I assume at some point he'll want to commit himself more to something.

I agree that he needs to start practicing. I would love to see a new and improved Mike Portnoy.

He really should start something with Sherinian, and I don't think it would compare to Planet X because the arrangements would be different I'm sure. Jonas Hellborg should play bass. I don't know who to put in as guitarist.

I just want him to be in a great band where his potential is fulfilled, which AM doesn't do.

I'm sure he's capable of making a great prog rock/metal band - hell transatlantic is evidence enough.

Practicing his drumming would be a good idea too.

Well, MP had a strong vision about what DT's music should be. So why not continue on that path and form a new band to compete with DT? MP's band would be heavier, with some "cookie monster" growling, angry lyrics about ex-band members etc.

Maybe that is what MP has in mind for AM once he gains 100 % control of the band? Russell Allen fits as the singer at least. I do not know the other members of AM to say anything about them, though.
