What Do You Want Mike Portnoy To Do?

Everyone is complaining that A-Mob is bad, but some people like it. Then you have Neal Morse's album and the upcoming MMPLM album which are more accepted as great MP-projects. The question is... What do you want MP to work on in the next 12 months or so?

I would love if Transatlantic got back together again for a 4th album. This is very likely, hopefully, due to 3 of the 4 members not in a working, established band; or in Roine's case, putting The Flower Kings on hold while working on Agents of Mercy. I also wouldn't mind seeing MP form another prog band, something different than TA.

I'm really interested in his project with John Sykes, and hopefully that has a good influence from both guys.

As for a long term main project, I hope he finds a band with a good balance of metal and complexity, something where he can put his talents to good use, rather than A-Mob where he's doing something more straight forward (that's not a dig at AM, I just want him to use his full potential).

Hasn't he already done that? He seems to keep stressing that Adrenaline Mob IS a full time band, not a side project type thing

I don't know, maybe. I haven't been keeping up much with the Adrenaline Mob stuff (not my cup of tea), just seemed more to me like a side project kind of thing for some reason.

Talking music only, just whatever he feels comfortable with. I'll check out everything that's new and see if I like it. I feel I'm going to like most of the stuff he's involved in. (I still need to try the AM EP... haven't got around to it yet.)

If you'd told me when he first left DT that one of the options was him and Russell Allen in a band (even a hard rock, non prog band) I'd definitely have chosen that, but I wasn't impressed by their EP. If somehow Adrenaline Mob started showing better results I'd actually quite like to see it, but if they were continuing only like that then I'd prefer something else.

I'd love to see Mike put together a progressive rock/metal band. I could imagine him hooking up with Derek Sherinian and Jim Matheos and doing something killer. But I doubt it'll ever happen.

MP appears to have the opposite personality to me. I'm pretty chilled and laid back and love nothing more than having nothing to do. Unfortunately I now have two young children so life is pretty torturous at present (not that I wish I didn't have kids-just that I had more free time!). I couldn't imagine living like MP at all. It would be my idea of hell itself.

Yeah, maybe MP needs to lie back and smell the roses for a time, then form a prog metal band and show everyone how it should be done.

I wish him peace, I really do, but I don't think he knows how to do peace.

First thing: stop treating AM as anything other than the Russell Allen side-cheese-project that it is.

Tbh, I think he needs to find something akin to A7X. Something fairly heavy, diverse within reason and that allows him to stretch out his chops somewhat but which is fundamentally a metal band first and foremost.

To expand on Adami's suggestion, take a break and work on his drumming. Get some fresh ideas into his play. He used to be *the* drummer back in the 90s; he should try to recapture that.
