I've never heard Metal purists hating on them.  SLUDGE purists, yeah, but not metal purists. :P

Hm, you know, metal genre purists are worse than indies. I really believe that  :lol No-one is quicker to hate on a band that's had some success than the "die-hard" metallers on the interwebz.

With that said, Mastodon are the "perfect" metal band, in my opinion. They've got everything down: the style, the lyrics, the substance, the attitude, etc... Listening to "Crack the Skye" really makes me think, "yeah, this is what metal is all about and this is why I love it."

Of course they can't touch the legends but maybe 10 albums from now they'll be in a position to compete.

Crack the Skye and Leviathan made them surpass all the legends.

I dunno man. You gotta take two things into account:

1.) A band like Maiden have like half a dozen flawless albums, compared to Mastodon's 2.

2.) Even if "Crack The Skye" is better than every Maiden album (it might be, I'm not saying it's not, I disagree, but I respect people who think it is) it's still partly because it had what was done by bands like Maiden to stand on. So, still gotta give Maiden some credit.

Oh you can give Maiden, Metallica, and Sabbath all the credit in the world for being the most influential.  No one can deny that.

But Maiden only has two flawless albums out of 15: Powerslave and AMOLAD.  Mastodon also has two flawless albums but they don't really play it safe the way Maiden usually does.  And The Hunter is going to continue that tradition (just finished an ambitious concept album tour?  SONGS ABOUT SEX IN SPACE!).

Yeah, I don't see why influence matters when thinking about the 'best'. If you count it, it simply becomes a matter of who came first.

Lol, I hear you.

But Maiden have way more flawless albums than that.

Actually, all Maiden albums are pretty much awesome except No Prayer for the Dying and Fear of the Dark.

I guess my fanboy colors are showing... haha.

Yeah, I don't see why influence matters when thinking about the 'best'. If you count it, it simply becomes a matter of who came first.

It's not about who came first, it's about who made the biggest contribution to the tradition. In this case, tons of bands have already "outdone" bands like Priest and Maiden, but it doesn't really matter, because they never would have done it without all that had been down already by those two to pave the way... I guess that's what I'm saying.

The best metal bands right now are Agalloch, Amorphis, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Opeth and OSI. I might be forgetting one or two but those are the big ones.

All-time, I would add Metallica. I would probably also add Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden and probably a couple more bands I am forgetting.

The single best one? That's too hard to call.

Exactly what 'tradition' are we talking about here?

Avenged Sevenfold:

heaviness? check.
speed? check.
melody? check.
quality lyrics? check.
virtuosity? check.
fantastic riffs? check.
innovation? check.
Syn? check.

Fix'd.

Also I should give Strapping Young Lad an honorable mention. Bands that are done for really can't compete but fuck they were awesome.

Also Opeth has forfeited their metalness  with Heritage.

Not one member of A7X is virtuosic. I fucking hate when people say that.

Also Opeth has not "forfeited their metalness" just because you don't like the album. Sorry.

Syn is an alumni of GIT. Shadows has trained under the same vocal coach as used by Chris Cornell and Axl Rose. The Rev was a self taught multi-instrumentalist.

Keep in mind, I'm an A7X fan myself. I just think you're over-exaggerating their abilities. Just because Syn went here, Shadows trained with this person, and The Rev taught himself, doesn't mean shit. They're good songwriters but average on their instruments.

Whatever man. I like A7X, but I think your mind is a bit clouded by fanboyism. :p They don't have to be virtuosos to be a good band, or for you to like them....there's nothing wrong with being an average player. I'm not bashing the band. I'm just saying there's many more technically skilled metal bands out there.

I don't understand the concept of "the best" band.

First, how exactly do you measure it? The most fans? The highest average rating % from reviews? The most neck injuries caused? Orgasms created during career? Yeah, you get the point. It's entirely subjective. You could go the "most influential" path, but then the only band in which case it can be measured at all is Black Sabbath since they pretty much started the genre, but still, they've only started a very small part of all that is metal now after these 40 years or so. So... not really.

Second, it's not even possible to compare bands from entirely different sub-genres. How will you convince someone Kreator is superior to Mayhem? Not even possible. And what about great bands which are mostly metal but with heavy influences of something non-metal like Opeth?...

Either I took this thread too seriously or something's wrong. :P
