I agree with this. Although Iron Maiden is my favourite band, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest had far more influence in the genre and are more iconic bands for sure IMO, particularly Priest I feel really gave birth to the metal sound. (Sabbath started it, but their doomy/stoner metal was not really the popular form of metal in the years to come. They were obviously still really influential though). Maiden had a very unique sound with a lot of melody, a very hard style for other bands to pull off (considering you need geniuses like Adrian Smith and Steve Harris as well as Bruce's voice) well. Thats not to say they had no influence however. Genres such as Melodeath and Power Metal were influenced by Maiden IMO, at least a bit.

Melodeath is VERY influenced by Iron Maiden. The melodic parts of Maiden were the real key to starting the genre.
