Is ADTOE the Dream Theater Album you were hoping for?
« on: September 15, 2011, 06:27:45 AM »
Sorry to open yet another ADTOE thread (or poll) but I'd really like to know. As a fan since the early 90s and having been rather disappointed with their more recent output, this album is just what I wanted to hear from them. I'm absolutely loving it.

So, what do you think?

I answered yes, but I haven't at all been disappointed with any of their other recent albums. It was what I hoped for from DT, as was BCASL, as was SC, etc.

Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Too hard to say for now, but mayve I was expecting more beautiful solo moments like beginning of TITS or BAI solo. Because I'm all satisfied with heavy side of ADTOE it's balanced very well.

I feel that ADTOE is more than what I was hoping for. I couldn't even imagine that it would be this great!

I can agree with this, but I was hoping the pendulum would swing back toward the more proggy/melodic side.  ADTOE seems to me a more "mature" album than the last two, if that makes sense.

ONly listened to the album once so far, so I cant answer just yet. Breaking all Illusions is glorious though, and better than most of their stuff post 6DOIT.

It's hard to say yes or no, always when DT does something new, it's good.

This is exactly what I thought it should be... a transitional album that just happens to kick ass. Now that DT know's they haven't scared off their fans, would expect to see something maybe much more experimental the next time around. Something I think they'll build a concensus on and prepare the fans in advance for. They did a grewat job preparing the fans for Mangini with the video and all of the interviews, although the fact that the guy is a monster doesn't hurt either. But all in all, I couldn't be happier with the album.

Yes!! A return to the sound I fell in love with, just with a heavier guitar tone. A "return to their roots" masterpiece that now allows them to have DT12 play SDOIT to this album's SFAM. By that I mean, now that they have delivered an album in the classic DT sytle sans MP, they are now freed up to be as experimental as they want on the next one.

Well, in a way. It was a step in the right direction. But it doesn't give me nearly the same vibes that any of the holy trinity albums I&W, SFAM or SDOIT do for me - it doesn't have nearly enough of those eargasm moments, there are but a few on this album.

I'm still glad DT could deliver at least solid material for the first time in quite a while though.

In some ways, yes.

Regardless, I think it's a great album, the best they've done in a long, long time.  And at this point, I think it's as much as anybody could have hoped for given that the band is at this particular point in their history.

Hm, it was the album I was expecting, but maybe not the one I was hoping for. I'm just not too happy with it. Even with the three ballads, the whole sounds too heavy for me, maybe that's the reason why I have felt like listening to FII lately.

Well, I haven't heard it yet because the boxset is late.  But, a friend of mine called me Friday night and said it wasn't the album he was hoping for.  :-\

+1, although I like it better than their last 2 albums, it hasn't hooked me yet like their classic albums. IMO though, Breaking all Illusions (which screams Learning to Live) is their best song since Octavarium, leave it to JM. The lyrics as well seem a step up from "LET MEH INTRADOOCE MAH BRUTHAH!"

I hate when one of my friends complains that X band's latest CD isn't as heavy as their previous one despite listening to *nothing* but Metal.

::) Well, go and listen to *any* of your other 500 metal albums if you want something heavy.

Seriously.

Like every single time, I wanted a _new_ Dream Theater album, without "return to the roots" and bullshit like that. Contrary to what some people say, I got what I wanted, and furthermore it's great.

So, yes.

Yes. It's like "modern" DT but without all the 'problems' that a lot of people had with the previous few albums.

Sounds relaxed, fresh and invigorated.
