Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Kill yourself. Orion is almost DT worthy.

Was he being sarcastic? Hard to tell. If not, it should result in a perma-ban.

Orion is one of the best Metallica songs IMO as well. The Call of Ktulu tops it, though.

I don't even like Metallica anymore, but that's the most hilariously wrong thing I've read on this board ever. Thank you. Sig'd.

Don't mean to be too nitpicky or read into much, but did he say it like "DT's best era was the one I was in"?

Wow, yeah dick factor has just increased tenfold imho...   Portnoy just can't help himself can he?

Eh, the way it sounds it was said in jest. I am only surprised he would even go there, i.e. make any comment in the first place. It's bound to come back at him.

Pretty cool story, and Portnoy was probably making a joke, but not one in very good taste, methinks.

However, I feel that there's a lot of untold backstory here, as to why you had VIP tix for the Big 4, and were in the same room as all those names.

Sounds like a blast dude, I can't believe they played RIDE THE LIGHTNING  :metal :metal  Don't care what anyone thinks of my credibility I'll always have time to jam to classic thrash Metallica. Also, let Portnoy be that could have spoiled what was an amazing day.

However, I feel that there's a lot of untold backstory here, as to why you had VIP tix for the Big 4, and were in the same room as all those names.

Well My mom is friends with this guy who used to go buy the name Metal Joe. He had a house near Old Bridge NJ where metallica used to stay at when they moved out here from the west coast. They would practice at his house and party all the time. This started before Kill em all was made. Then they actually wrote ride the lightning at his house! He also had other bands come through like Slayer. If you watch the Hall of fame show with metallica you will see him on stage with them. I have this book that his the pictures. Last christmas my mom said "I got you something special." I opened it and it was a picture signed to me personally by all the guys in Metallica and a backstage pass. I framed it and hung it up.

I get a call last week from her saying Joe wants to take me and a friend (along with his friends) to the metallica show all free, and VIP. And a chance to meet the band. Of course I said yes! We didn't actually get to meet the band because when he went backstage they weren't there yet. They were coming in to yankees stadium via helicopter before the show. But that's ok I've met them once before so I wasn't really disappointed, I was just excited about the whole thing. Then the seated tix we had were 7th row in the comfy leather chairs, that was unreal!

Here is the setlist from last night...

The Ecstasy of Gold
(Ennio Morricone song)
Creeping Death
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Fuel
Ride the Lightning
Fade to Black
Cyanide
All Nightmare Long
Sad But True
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Orion
One
Master of Puppets
Blackened
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
Encore:
Overkill
(Motörhead cover)
Battery
Seek & Destroy

I was there. I probably saw you and didn't even realize it. For Metallica, I was dead center maybe 5 or 6 dudes back.

edit: Just read the entire thread and realized you were in a seated VIP section. Odds are I didn't see you.

All Nightmare Long isn't too bad IMO. The only thing that brings it down a bit is one of the bridges.

Anthrax was cool.
Megadeth was awesome considering the shit going on with Dave at the moment.
Slayer was meh. They were better the first time I saw them, and I didn't almost get crushed the first time I saw them.
Metallica is fucking Metallica man. That set was amazing.

Not to into anthrax.
Megadeath was cool, they sounded good.
Slayer is great live but mean it's like the same song over and over again. I can only take so much of it before it gets old fast.
Metallica put on the best show i've seen from them. Was sick.

Sounds like an awesome show! And we may have been over this but where in NJ are you?

Okay, can't withhold my MP commentary...

But the real thing is that MP came to you just to "use" your shirt and show a bit more about his ego again.

:tup

Don't mean to be too nitpicky or read into much, but did he say it like "DT's best era was the one I was in"?

Even if it's so, do you expect him to say/think:

F**k im glad i'm out, now DT are really going to kick ass, yeah!!  :metal

No, if he were someone else I would expect him to just be a mature adult and not say anything at all... but

He has, of course, been the model for self restraint and understatement up to this point.

And all those who say he was "joking"? That's something fans say when they can't admit dude has been acting like a teenager for a long time.

I tend to agree.  Best response would probably just have been a polite, "Nice shirt."  Or if he wanted to joke, something along the lines of, "Hey, nice shirt.  I hear those guys used to be pretty good."  Actually, if it was clear he was joking, the latter would actually be pretty funny.

Ah, central Jersey. A strange place. I am from teh smelly part... oh wait...

Yes. What he actually said sort of reminded me of something a meathead college student would say. "THAT was the era, man! That team hasn't been the same since I graduated!"
