The Lyrics of ADTOE
« on: September 13, 2011, 01:55:48 AM »
I must say, while the lyrics may not be their best, this album has easily the most impressive lyrics since SDOIT. John Myung has made a triumphant return this time around, with some beautiful, thought provoking lyrics in BAI. JLB is at it again with his touching and emotional words. And I think JP nailed it out of the park for the first time in many years with BITS and OTBOA.

Highlights:

-Breaking All Illusions
-Bridges In The Sky
-On The Backs of Angels
-Far from Heaven
-This Is The Life
-Beneath The Surface

"Wind
Carry me home
The fabric of reality is tearing apart
The piece of me that died
Will return
To live again"

"Some of us choose to live gracefully, some can get lost in the maze, and lose their way home"

With the sun in place
There's a test of faith
Streams of thought awaken
New realities
Singularities
Breaking all illusions

Yes, the lyrics are a very big relief for me..
There are still some cheesy lines, like in the Lost Not Forgotten verse, but the rest of the song picks up the slack after that.

The chorus of Bridges in the Sky is a definitive highlight of the album, lyrically and melodically,
some lines on Far From Heaven are absolute tear-jerkers, they're just so deep...
Breaking All Illusions has a lot of great lines, no doubt, it seems very introspective.

Lyrically, I'd rate the album an 8.4/10

I'd even go as far to say that it's their best lyrics since Awake! Even 6DOIT was hit-and-miss, just listen to Goodnight Kiss... There's nothing bad at all here, the lyrics are flawless and mature, great transition from BC&SL.

Yeah, they made it lyrically as well. A very little amount of cheesiness this time. It looks like they took the time to write them, some of the lyrics on previous albums were like "oh my god, we don't have lyrics and deadline's there - let's write something" and others were just ridiculous. No more ruining good songs by shitty stories.

To me best lyrics on the album are:
BTS (top 5 DT lyrics really)
BITS (chorus especially),
BAI (JMX really should write more, he never disappoints),
FFH (shame that there's no more JLB lyrics, he proved on his solo albums that he can do great songs),

What's great about the album is that even if the lyrics aren't top notch, the melodies make you wanna sing your ass off (like in LNF) :)

Could anyone just give a quick summary of what every song is about? I don't think I've read that yet...

The lyrics are a big step up from the previous albums, imo. I like JP's lyrical effort a lot, although his work doesn't come close to Awake or FII. Still, Beneath The Surface, Bridges In The Sky and BMUBMD are really good imo. JLB delivers some great stuff as well, as does JM.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

I'm happy too although I got the message of OTBOA's totally wrong ! I thought it was to do with the bankers but its actually about people who milk the system as opposed to those that contribute and make things happen.
I think I like my version better  ;D

Could anyone just give a quick summary of what every song is about? I don't think I've read that yet...

The way I see it:

OtBoA - US Financial plight.
BMU, BMD - "Bipolar" media treatment of celebrities such as Britney, Amy Winehouse etc
Lost Not Forgotten - Persian army that no one really remembers.
This Is The Life - Staying true to yourself as a person. Focused on the band.
Bridges In The Sky - It's about being healed by a shaman.
Outcry - Arab Spring
Far From Heaven - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0297884/
Breaking All Illusions - Self reflection and finding yourself through introspective thought
Beneath The Surface - Wasted potential between two people.

BTS is top 5 DT lyrics material and the whole thing is much better than anything since FII.

The lines that stand out to me right now:

Can't live up
Can't let down

Sun
Come shine my way
May healing waters bury all my pain

No one truly has the answers

And I disappeared into the darkness
And the darkness turned to pain
And never went away
Until all that remained
Was buried, deep beneath the surface

Rise up, be counted
Be strong and unite

Overall very good lyrics, much better than BCSL.

Overall, I agree with you.  SDOIT & 8VM had some good lyrics, but not as consistent.
It's the Internet.  Everything everybody says, no matter how factual-sounding, is opinion.

As most have said, a noticeable step up from SC and BCSL. I think there's still potential to do better... and if this upward trajectory continues then DT12 will be an absolute corker lyrically.

As a side bar, Beneath the Surface is the best set of words Petrucci has written in a long, looooong time. I prefer it when he writes those kind of lyrics more than his topical or fictional stuff.

Huge step up from the past 2 albums. Beneath the Surface is probably one of JPs best

Some are definitely a bit cheesy (See Lost Not Forgotten), but there are definitely some nice ones on here too. Probably my favorite album, lyrically, since SDOIT

Couldn't agree more. I've never gotten into their lyrics as much as these.

TITL, FFH, BAI, and BTS especially speak to me.

I heard this too somewhere, and I don't know who decided that, but JLB actually explained that it's about parents expecting their kids to prove they're the best or whatever.
He explains it at 6:52 in this video: https://www.youtube.com/user/dreamtheater?feature=chclk#p/a/f/2/tuw-25y6GC4

I would say that this album is DT's most consistently good from a lyrical standpoint since Awake, slightly edging out SDOIT.  Outcry is the only real weak point.  LNF's lyrics aren't what I'd call "good," but they're not bad and I like 'em for what they are.

BAI and BTS are lyrical standouts IMO, and the rest I haven't mentioned are pretty solid as well.
