Damn, Dedicated To Chaos sold more.

So Queensryche is selling in the range of an underground metal band that's never been on a major label then?

After listening to Dystopia, I have come to the conclusion that it's a decent enough album, but it lacks the true magic of IE's best works.  There isn't a real classic on the album, although the title track, Anthem and Anguish of Youth come close.  It's pretty much more of the same that we've seen from IE since Something Wicked, without a true epic to define the album (Damien, Gettysburg).   I'm sure much of it will translate well live, but it's certainly nothing that's going to make a new fan stand up and take notice.

About the only real hope for the future is the new vocalist, who as was noted pretty much combines Barlow and Ripper's style.  I'd say he has Barlow's low range and emotion, with Ripper's power, bit and high range.  That's a pretty good combination, if only Jon could write some true classics to fit the voice.

But it's sad to say, I'd say Jons best days are well well behind him.  In fact, his best writing in the last decade or so hasn't even been for IE, but for the Demons and Wizards project.  Perhaps the switch of vocalists has really thrown him, and the promise of the Something Wicked albums never really came to fruition--they're more or less good, but not the blowaway classics that we had hoped they would be.

But still, I'm looking forward to seeing the band live to see how the new material comes across, and how the new vocalist does.  Let's hope that Jon is a much better judge of setlists than he has been in the past, b/c the GB tour really didn't allow Ripper to stretch himself with the classic IE material, and the Crucible tour was just a complete fucking disaster, at least on the show that I was at where Matt just plain sucked, especially with the Ripper material (although I was told that Barlow was ill for much of the tour).  Let's hope we get a better mix of the very old IE, the Barlow IE and the Ripper IE, plus the new material.  I think Stu Block might do an awesome job of all of it, and I can't wait to find out.

Just shows the diversity of opinion, as I feel Framing Armageddon has more "classics" on it then almost any other album.

There are some really good songs on there:  A Charge to Keep, Ten Thousand Strong, possibly Clouding, but I felt that both albums didn't quite gel.  Perhaps if they had tightened the song and story structure a bit, cut out some of the filler, they could have had one pretty awesome album instead of two mediocre ones.  But then again, when bands decided to release material over 2 CDs rather than focusing them into one, that is often the end result.  (e.g. Load/Reload, Use Your Illusion 1/2).

A band should always play half their new album. Otherwise, why release it? If the material is strong enough, then it will fit in well. If its weak, then they shouldn't have released it in the first place.

Iced Earth just announced a co-headlining tour with Symphony X! Oh look, no Arizona date... FUCK YOU JON!

I was gonna tell you guys a few weeks back about this tour, but I was just as quickly told to keep my mouth shut as soon as I heard. Is there a chance they'll fit in a AZ date on one of the off days? Plus this is just one leg. Give'em time and they'll hit everyone. Also, take into consideration that if your area has shitty promoters, bands have no obligation to make a stop. New Hampshire and Massachusetts are suffering from this more and more. Bunch of fucking thieves.

Here's the press release:

Quote
ICED EARTH, SYMPHONY X ANNOUNCE
NORTH AMERICAN 2012 CO-HEADLINER TOUR

What do you get when you mix equal parts Dystopia and Iconoclast?

One of the most eagerly anticipated metal tours of 2012.

"I'm excited to tour with SYMPHONY X," ICED EARTH founder Jon Schaffer said. "They're phenomenal musicians and very cool guys. This co-headliner tour will be a great experience for the fans. It is also way overdue for us to play a proper tour of North America. Get ready!"

SYMPHONY X guitarist Michael Romeo echoes Schaffer’s enthusiasm.

“We are very excited about the upcoming North American Tour with Iced Earth,” Romeo said. “We first met Jon & the guys a few years back and they were really cool. When the idea of a Co-Headline tour surfaced, we thought it would be awesome. The fans can expect a night of great music from both bands. We look forward to seeing you all real soon!”

The three-month, 30+-date, co-headliner tour begins January 31st in Hartford, Connecticut, and concludes March 10th in Clifton Park, New York.
At that point, ICED EARTH will continue another week – without SYMPHONY X – for five more dates.

Pre-sale tickets go on sale exclusively on Oct 31st via these websites:

https://tixx1.artistarena.com/icedearth/
https://www.enterthevault.com/

VIP tickets for ICED EARTH are available through the Artist Arena link.

Schaffer formed ICED EARTH in Tampa, Florida, in 1984. Since then, he has released 10 studio albums, the newest being the highly-acclaimed Dystopia (October, 2011) – which debuted at #67 on the Billboard Top 200 chart – one live album, two compilations, three boxed sets, and several DVDs. Thanks to massive worldwide sales -- and rabidly loyal fans – ICED EARTH has earned a seat in the pantheon of America's most successful heavy metal bands.

With their innovative mixture of heavy metal and progressive rock, New Jersey juggernauts SYMPHONY X continue to be a favored staple among fans of prog metal around the world. Iconoclast, the band’s eighth studio album, debuted at #76 on the Billboard Top 200 chart in the U.S. and at #105 on the Canadian Soundscan Top 200 chart in June.

Like I said in the SX thread,  I don't really care about either band a much as I used to but this is actually a really cool bill.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"

No, I know more then just Ripper :P

The Iced Earth street teamers find out stuff way in advance. I find out when they do.

Both artists have the same length in set, which is usually 75 minutes for a co-headline.

They will probably switch the headlining spot each night

This usually doesn't happen anymore. It was popular 30+ years ago to rotate, but most tours have a static lineup, even for co-headline stuff. I'm willing to bet Iced Earth goes on first. I'm making that prediction now.

To be honest, bands like Nevermore and Soilwork were willing to settle for the "support" slot title opening for SymphX. This makes me think there's an ego thing going on from Mr. Schaffer...but that's just speculation.

The same thing with the co-headline Saxon tour in Europe, and I was told that was a nightmare with all the cancellations and such. Seems like IE doesn't like to settle for support, unless of course its opening for say Heaven & Hell (a gig Ripper got them by the way, a few months before being fired :P).

Just saying.
