New video about the making of the album:

I really think there's nothing Stu Block can't do. He's a machine.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

Despite the Dante's Inferno remake being weird, I'm still kinda excited about this.

I actually talked to Stu a few years back about singing on my CD.

He eventually vanished. :( I was so excited too.

Anyone hear that new Iced Earth song on youtube? I don't want to link to it, just in case... but anyway, it sounds very good! Out of 10, I'd say it's 8.5+  It's a very fun song.

edit: It isn't Anthem, it doesn't have the name listed. It just says "Dystopia (New Song 2011)"

edit 2: Okay, the song is "Dystopia"

Dystopia is OK, but the production isn't that great at all. I hope it's just the youtube quality or something.

Keep your expectations modest. Those two songs are the flagship ones, as both had videos shot for them, and both are in my opinion the album highlights. Not saying it's bad by any means, but those are really the strongest tracks on it.

This is the same quality of what I have. I actually quite like how it sounds. Everything has a fair amount of room to breathe yet it sounds massive. Meaty tones with balance.

Just listened to Anthem and the title track.  it's amazing how much Jon has made Stu sound like Matt, very similar IMO.  I'm liking what he's doing though, he sounds great, excellent singer.  Two great songs though, and even though I'm listening to youtube, I really like the production.  And I'm surprised Troy's guitar work was actually quite decent, surprising.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Yeah, as I said, its clear Jon wants his singers to sounds a certain way (that being exactly like him :P). The only one not to was Ripper, likely being why he's my favorite.
And yes, Troy's work isn't bad. Nothing really mind-blowing, but then again, leads haven't really been focal in ten years since Larry left.

I personally really didn't like Ripper. His voice really didn't seem to feel right

I will go on record as saying Ripper's voice with Schaffer's guitar tone were possibly the single greatest sound to my ear. The most aggressive riffing with the most wicked vocals was just a perfect match for me.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but after listening to Barlow's and Stu's approach at "Dante's Inferno" back and forth, I have to admit I like Stu's version more. Now maybe this could be due to the fact that his vocals are higher in the mix than Barlow's is, but even with that aside, the way he just belts out every word is just mind blowing. I get more of a sense of diversity in his vocals than I do with Barlow, in just simple things in the way he pronounces every word, and how he adds a certain twist to them in the way Barlow doesn't do.

As fantastic as Barlow's vocals are in the song, I feel at that point in his career he wasn't at his vocal peak, where as Stu sings the song now at a time where he's perfect. Barlow's approach at the song seems much more straight forward, where as Stu really throws in all kinds of twists and turns. I just really feel so much passion and energy in Stu's voice, it's incredible. Maybe this could be due to me hearing the original song so many times, so I could be a little bias with my thoughts, I'll have to give it some time.

I'm definitely anticipating how Stu will approach some of Barlow's best works like "The Coming Curse" "Dracula" "Damian" and others off Horror Show and SWTWC in a live setting. I'm sure once their tour kicks in, we'll be hearing tons of them.

Are you transcribing the album for iced earth or just for fun?
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

Things that I like about it:

1. It's pretty much the most straightforward, direct album Iced Earth has done since Dark Saga. Every song isn't buried in orchestrations and choirs.
2. Given all the flak Troy gets, the guitar solos are not that bad. They don't feel like they were bolted on from another galaxy like the one in the Dante remake.
3. Still not sure Stu Block should spend so much time imitating Matt Barlow, but overall I like his performance.
4. Dark City is pretty much the best impersonation of Iron Maiden I've heard this side of White Wizzard.
5. Some nicely memorable choruses.

Things I don't like about it:
1. Drums are mixed WAY too high. The double bass drum patterns nearly overwhelm the rhythm guitar parts.
2. Some occasionally bad lyrics, but that's part and parcel of bands doing what I like to call "book report" music-or in this case, "movie report"
3. I guess I could give Schaffer credit for moving away from the usual sort of riffing he does, but it'd be nice if the replacements were memorable.

I like it well enough-if I was gonna grade it, it'd get a solid B-but to go back to the Lucy and the football thing, this time I got to kick the football, but the hold wasn't exactly perfect and the ball bounced off the uprights. I like it better than Crucible, but that's kind of not saying much.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

I think that's a fair assessment and probably how I would rate it.
