I think it'd be awesome if they did something pretty far removed from their usual prog-metal formula.

Good music.

This.  It's thread polution like this that drive me out of the DT side of the forum.  Can we enjoy the new album and tour before we even remotely think of the next album?

Sorry if this feels like pollution to you, but it seemed interesting to me and to some others as well.
I would love to enjoy the new album, but I'll get it by the 9th at the very earliest. So I can't.
I would also be delighted to talk about their new tour. But not only have I not been to any show yet, I'll only be capable of doing so next year when they come back to Europe. And they are not currently touring, so there's not much to talk about at the moment.

A concept album would be neat, but that definitely wouldn't be at the top of my list
I'm also not too concerned about whether or not it has epics because (while I do love epics), my 4 favorite albums don't have epics
I want lots of proggy moments, lots of Myung and JR
I also want more lyrics from Myung and hopefully more from JLB also.
and a nice balanced disk with a couple shorter, emotional ballads, and also some longer more intense songs.

That just about covers it...

*sigh* Fine, I'll cave. If they do another epic, I'd prefer something more along the lines of Finally Free than ACOS, or more along the lines of Metropolis Pt. 1 than TBOT or TSF.

Great melodies and catchy hooks, please. Don't leave that job to James, the new album is severely lacking in that respect.

And another 20+ min epic would be great, I love all of them and they make better long songs than short songs.

Really? Your post had nothing to contribute to the thread. I'm not being ignorant, but there is no reason to ruin what is now a legitimate thread, especially with many more people having heard it due to the stream.

On-topic: I hope that James writes more lyrics! I love his lyrics and its a pity he isn't one of the main lyricists.

As the release approaches, I am slowly being driven insane with desire for DT's new album. I found that thinking about their next album actually helped to ease my anxiety. Why? I guess it's because it is so far away and abstract that I cannot really want it, especially when we have a real new album coming out soon. That being said, I thought it was a cool idea for us to share some ideas about their next album and collectively distract each other!

So, what would I want DT to do with their next album? This:
- A concept album (preferably one telling a story)
- An awesome drum-focused song that is both rhythmic and melodic
- A very long epic (at least 18 minutes)
- The story should be about a Pirate whose ship sinks and then finds himself stranded on what seems to be a desert island. There lives a Bear who is very protective of his territory, but also a Wizard who is trying to find a way to solve all of the world's problems through magic. Upon exploring the island the Pirate finds a magical lamp and unleashes the Genie, who breaks his traditional rules and gives each other character one wish (instead of giving the Pirate three wishes). While all that happens, the characters feel a mysterious, silent presence watching upon them, which shall be called Quiet. There should be conflict and tragedy ensuing from that setup, while at the end it is revealed that it was all Quiet's doing, who is actually the writer of the story. All of that being said, I allow DT to change the storyline any way they choose to :rollin

What about you? What do you wish for DT's 12th studio album?
Oh oh oh! Can 'Quiet" be a ninja?!  :)

 :tup

I'd like a more fusion-oriented album, and/or acoustic.  Neither is likely.

I'm not worried, though.  Other than The Beatles, I can't think of another band which has produced so many studio albums that have disappointed me so little.  I am 99.9% certain that I will at least "like" DT12.

I definitely get the impression from interviews that he will very much be a part of the writing process next album. I can't wait to hear Mangini as a fully integrated member after they've had a year or two together.

Yeah,  I gotta say #1 for me is an immortal performace from MM that rivals MP's work from WDADU - SDOIT. Lofty aspirations there.

A Double-Disc Concept album with at least one insturmental song especially showcasing MM playing abilities. That's good enough for me.  ;D
