Bands for DT fans
« on: September 05, 2011, 06:18:05 PM »
I'm making this new topic because lately, I can't find any good new metal bands... Maybe it's just that, well, after listening to DT it gets quite hard to find anything that good  :metal Anyway, if any of you guys know any good metal bands that you think that someone who likes DT will also like, please post below. Thanks! :yarr

When you say DT, is that for the metal side, the progressive side or what?

There are lots of bands that are very popular on this board like Rush, Opeth, Porcupine Tree etc.

Wolf's list is pretty extensive (and accurate), but to narrow it down to a couple that I have no doubt any DT fan would like:

Circus Maximus
Symphony X
Star One
Ayreon (some of his work... definitely The Human Equation)
Spock's Beard (although they are more prog than metal)
Rush
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Opeth (if you like growls, and maybe even if you don't)
Porcupine Tree
Iron Maiden
Pink Floyd

I think those are pretty popular around here.  :P

Symphony X
Savatage/ Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Queensryche (up to about 1994)
Kamelot
Circus Maximus
Pagan's Mind
Ayreon, Star One and various other projects by Arjen Anthony Lucassen
Fates Warning
Crimson Glory
Evergrey
Watchtower
Morgana LeFay
Balance of Power
Adagio
Thought Chamber
Kingsbane
Pain of Salvation
Enchant
Shadow Gallery
Opeth (growly, but still very prog)

Also, you should check out solo projects by various members of DT, most notably James LaBrie/Mullmuzzler, Liquid Tension Experiment, Transatlantic, Planet X/ Derek Sherinian and Dominici

(NOTE:  I was only listing progessive metal bands.  If you are interested in checking out prog-rock, also look up Genesis, Yes, Rush, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, Saga, Spock's Beard and other similar bands)

Enjoy  :tup

How could I have forgotten Seventh Wonder, great fucking band, new album is pretty good too.

I've never checked out Darkwater, Karkamanic or Haken, I'll have to do something about that too.

And anything Jorn is pure win; Avantasia, Masterplan, Millenium, Ark, Jorn, Beyond Twilight, Allen/Lande etc.

Ironically I never fully enjoyed bands that sound like or at least has roots on DT. Ayreon was a big letdown for me. The closest to full appreciation I had is Symphony X, all other bands like Circus Maximus, Andromeda bored me. I suggest you don't look for bands that sound like DT. Look for bands with different sounds so you can find out your exact taste. Here are my recommendations:

Muse
Riverside
Between the Buried and Me
Pain of Salvation
Tool
Thrice
Meshuggah
Sigur Ros

If you list Spock's Beard you should mention Transatlantic as well. More melodic and progressive imo (and much better).

Other prog bands I like:
Opeth (and I don't even like grunting)
Pain of salvation
Yes
Pink Floyd

(And much more)

Letters hit the nail on the head.  This thread comes up every other week in some form or another.  I still think we should make a sticky thread where everyone just posts their 25 favorite bands, and we can just post the link and close the thread.  I don't have the time to rattle off bands every time this comes up, so I usually end up not posting in them.  But I'm eating lunch now so I have time for a rant.  [/rant]

no.

It's a pretty impressive line-up...more impressive even than the music they made.

Were they sued by Tolkien?

The band's not around around more so maybe.  :lol

Has Mark Boals, Virgil Dontai, Tony Macalpine, Vitalij Kuprij, good stuff.

I thought the first two albums were absolutely fantastic.  Dreamtower was decent too, but the last one was crap.

they were all pretty tight musically, but Boals was just really cheezy.
He worked out well in Royal Hunt, bummer he's done with them.
