For energetic (and awesome) drummers, Dino Campanella is where it's at. I was completely hypnotized during the whole dredg concert, I couldn't stop looking at the guy, he was hitting the drums like they hit on his sister.
I  :heart this comment  :lol Watching him playing is awesome, so energy, powah! He is perfect for Dredg and helps them to define their style a lot, a combination of raw power, melodic bliss and subtle atmosphere.

This is a great live DVD of them playing:

As a guitar player I've never really taken alot of notice of drummers.
the ones who've stood out are Peart, MP (I love his musicality), Bill Ward, Eric Carr, Eric Singer, Bobby Jarzombek, Minneman, Carl Palmer.
The one I enjoy watching the most: Thomas Lang. His stuff on the Stork cd is jawdropping. I must have watched every Youtube clip of his in the last 12 months.

MM impressed me on the European tour recently.

1. Marco Minnemann: an absolute monster. He has great style, technique and most of all creativity. He's also mindblowingly diverse: he plays jazz in his instructional videos, auditioned for Dream Theater, played with Necrophagist and is a more than capable songwriter. And in addition, he is this type of quirky-always smiling guy, the kind of personality I love. I haven't heard his work with The Aristocrats but I'll do that as soon as I can.

Finally someone that sees Minnemann the same way I do. I have a couple of his solo records and I really love how the guy can mix styles so easily.

Martin Lopez (Opeth) is my biggest drumming influence. Such an incredible and underrated drummer.

Among others, I listen to/were inspired by:

Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)
Daniel Liljekvist (Katatonia)
Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree)
Alex Van Halen (Van Halen)
Neil Peart (Rush)
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater)
Lars Ulrich (Metallica) Of couse, we all know Lars's "playing" style nowadays, but I feel I should include him because he was the first drummer--and Metallica being the first band-- to influence me to be a drummer
Gene Hoglan (Fear Factory)
Raymond Herrera (Fear Factory)
Dave Lombado (Slayer)
Vinnie Paul (Pantera)

And many more...

I'd just like to point out two, EXTREMELY underrated drummers who have immense talent.

Johan Hallgren and Jason Rullo.

Seriously, they're not overly flashy and they don't do solo albums or clinics as far as I know, but if you actually pay attention to the drums on any PoS cd before Scarsick or any Symph X CD that Rullo is on...........that is some insane drumming and most of it is beyond difficult to play.

Rullo is definitely very good.

I think this thread can also be good for us n00bs to learn more about drumming: concepts, techniques, appreciation, etc. I've had a question since a long time ago: what the heck is "groove"? I searched wikipedia an I didn't really get what it is about, i.e. when do you know the drums sound groovy or not? I asked a friend of mine and he said it had to do with hitting the drums with softer or stronger strokes, but I don't think it has to do with that.

Groove is kind of hard to explain, it's adding a touch of freeness maybe the playing. When the playing sounds robotic and perfect, it lacks groove.

How is it snobby? I said it wasn't anything special, I didn't say it was bad. It was very good, but it wasn't on par with most of the drummers we're talking about.

Here's a few that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
Sean Reinert (Cynic)
Matt Cameron (Soundgarden / Pearl Jam)
Danny Walker (Intronaut)
Jon Theodore (ex-Mars Volta)
Orri Páll Dýrason (Sigur Ros)
Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins)

Also seconding Mario Duplantier and Brann Dailor. Both awesome drummers.

Jon Theodore is so good. His stuff with TMV is amazing. He makes what he's doing sound much more simple than it actually is. Haven't heard much else from him though. He has a project with Zack de la Rocha from RATM, but I haven't gotten around to listening to it yet.

As a drummer2B myself, I thought that I should follow this thread.... It's by far the best decision I've ever made....

:heart Neal Peart, Marco Minnemann
and of course MP

I would also add Bill Brufford. His rhythmic and timing are just perfect.

mmm thanks.. will check his work out...  :tup

Well, if you have never listened to him there are a couple of different things you can check out. For a more prog style, listen to his work in Yes (Yes through Close to the Edge). For more experimental stuff, King Crimson (Larks' Tongues in Aspic through THRAK). For a more Jazzy style, his solo work or his band named Earthworks.

Cheers... finally I've got some time now.... so I'll go through his work.... :tup

Dennis Chambers is definitely my fave drummer.
Billy Cobham is great.
Based on youtube browsing Marco Minnemann is my favorite rockish drummer.

Thank you Adami for the explanation. Maybe you can tell me what are ghost notes? Or better, since the explanation in wikipedia is good, why are ghost notes regarded so highly? I've heard more than once "that drummer is great, listen to the ghost notes" but I don't know why that is especial (besides, I cannot hear the said notes  :sadpanda:).

I forgot to mention Keith Moon as another favorite. I really dig his explosive style.

"Stars Die" by Porcupine Tree is a good example of ghost notes.

I'm sure Adami will give a better explanation but it's near silent notes played between the main beat.

Think Marco Minnemann is absolutly awesome. Really looking forward to seeing him on the Steven Wilson tour.
Also the keyboard player for SW is Gary Husband, who's really known for being a drummer.
He's Allan Holdsworth & John Mclaughlin's drummer so you can imagine how good he is.

SW rehearsal may turn into a drum off !

When i was a kid, I remember Max Roach being a guest on Sesame Street.  They showed a clip of him keeping a different beat with all ten of his fingers.  I've been searching the net for that clip for years and have never found it.  I thought they might post it after he recently passed away, but still haven't found it.  If anyone comes across it, please let me know!
