I only have Bilateral and Malina, Bilateral is significantly better.  I'll check out the new album, but if all the tracks sound the same, it probably won't interest me besides the best of those songs.

Bilateral has Waste of Air and that song freaking rules. cram - check out their song 'The Valley' from Coal. That could be my favorite Leprous song.

I'll come back to them at some point, they were fantastic live so just because I thought Malina wasn't the greatest (it does have good songs) I'm not ready to dump them.  I'll check that song out now though... and I've definitely listened to it before probably when I was checking them out last year.  It's solid, I'm guessing I'd probably enjoy Coal so I know where to look when I'm digging back in.

In my opinion this band squandered practically all of their potential after their first three albums, but I'll still listen to anything new they put out. The Congregation and Malina, for how much I don't like them, each have at least a couple good songs on them.

Ranking the first three albums is difficult because while Bilateral has the best sound and the highest peaks, it's also a lot more inconsistent than TPS and Coal. Honestly, if I had to pick, I think Coal would be their best album overall. The only songs from it I'm not too into are Foe and Contaminate Me, neither of which are bad.

^^ Contaminate Me is the one complaint I have about Coal. I wrote in my album roulette last year that it sounded like the soundtrack to someone dying by poison. I do not like it, no I do not, and thankfully it's at the very end of the record, but it still brings down an otherwise wonderful album. It's a rare metal record that can actually make me feel a little sick, yet there's something I really like about music having that effect on me.

1. Bilateral

2. The Congregation

3. Coal / Malina

5. Tall Poppy Syndrome

- Aeolia: not familiar enough

Bilateral has settled as one of my favourite albums ever for sure. Tall Poppy Syndrome has good ideas but just sounds super rushed and kinda cringy. I think I like Coal a bit more than Malina, they both have just a few songs/moments I'm not fond of. Mostly in the songs Salt, Illuminate and Captive. The Congregation is absolutely the perfect fusion between prog and alternative metal imo

Contaminate Me is easily the best on Coal and one of their best overall :lol

Oh wow. It really shows how consistent this band is. I tried coming up with my ‘least favourite’ track from this band for the other thread and I honestly do not know.
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.

Same, except it's because so many songs off of their most recent albums are so forgettable I don't even remember their names :neverusethis:

I'd put Coal a bit lower but otherwise I agree. Bilateral and Congregation are definitely my top 2.

Yes to Contaminate Me being one of their best tracks. Least favorite Leprous song? That’s really hard, all the TPS songs have redeeming qualities, so I guess it would probably be Salt for me since it just bores me, or maybe Captive

I'll back Cyril up and say that it is a tough call between Captive and Third Law for the most unappealing-sounding rhythm in a Leprous song.

third law is great, captive is just progressive wank without any groove
the last song on malina is also a complete waste of like 7 minutes or so iirc

i mean the production on the congregation is like twenty times better

another song i really love that does a thing like that is lifnej and it uses that style as like, a breakdown to cap off the heaviest part of the song it's not really the kind of thing you can base your main riff and chorus around well

which third law also doesn't do. the verses and chorus are straightforward and really catchy and then the crazy parts come in to catch you off guard
captive is just constantly uneasy and seasick and doesn't have any good vocal lines to back it up either it's just an unhinged disaster

also katt to be fair i don't like the last song on coal either much

Sure, Third Law might use it better, but they're both shitty riffs.  :lol

Alright, I'm done complaining about post-Coal Leprous now. Carry on.

As much as I love Malina, it does have some duds (as do all their albums, if I'm honest). I think that if I took my favourites from The Congregation and Malina, I'd have the perfect album, even if it might not flow cohesively  :lol

I'd go:

Malina
The Congregation

Bilateral
Tall Poppy Syndrome
Coal

Aeolia

Excited to see where they go next and if they can keep writing epic choruses (as that's probably what I love most about this band, followed by Baard's drumming).

The Congregation
Bilateral
Malina/Tall Poppy Syndrome
Coal

Yep, same for me right now. Coal has four good songs and the rest is pretty much abysmal, in my opinion.
This first band is Soen very cool swingy jazz fusion kinda stuff.

I should really get the DVD too, I've seen Contaminate Me and Slave from it on YouTube and they are simply astonishing. Also I've seen them live and they're insanely good.

The Congregation is my favourite album, followed closely by Bilateral. Bilateral's A-side is just gold, but The Congregation is more consistently good.
