Wow, that's actually somewhat enjoyable compared to MP's "growls". Though I still don't care much for Akerfeldt's growls on Opeth albums.

Still sounds completely out of place in a DT song. Especially being done by a professional growler...

Of course it does, but it sounds better. They should have rewrote the lyrics and vocal melody instead trying to make it fit. To be honest though I do kind of like the one outake where James is singing over the growling vocals.

Me and my friend were just talking today about BC&SL and what our favourite tracks were from that album. He said The Count of Tuscany. I agreed and said my second favourite was A Nightmare To Remember ft. Mikael Akerfeldt.

MP ruined that song for me. (I listen to it sans-MP vocals thanks to the deluxe collectors set.) MP talked at lengths about the release how they tried many approaches and basically defaulted to cookie monster vocals. Instead, Portnoy should have swallowed his pride, admitted to the tough position they were in, and called up MA for the album version.

To me, it will forever be the single biggest in-studio DT-blunder ever.

I am a HUGE Opeth fan and have always loved Mikael's vocals - both clean and harsh. He is one of the only vocalists that can make sing in a "death metal" voice and make me think "wow.. that was beautiful". However, he didn't sound too great on this part because the vocal lines were not made for this type of vocals. I still prefer MP's growly but clean vocals in this verse. Although in theory, this is made of nothing but pure awesome.

They said it was considered to have Akerfeldt come in and record that part, but decided against it because MP would just be doing it live every night anyway.

lithium said it well, MA is a good growler, but that's just not the kind of lyrics he generally does.

He has the best growl ever... when it's the "normal" singing his voice is awesome too. I wish I had that versatility!

I hate to defend MP here but his vocals are much better than Mikael.  I don't like that growly shit in that song...at least Mike has some emotion behind it.

Mikael sounds much better than Portnoy but I really think that the lyrics should be different. It's quite funny to hear Mikael growl "by the grace of god above" as he's an atheist and has written the lyrics for a Bloodbath song called Mock the Cross! :lol

I really like Mikael, but this is not much better! Still think they should have chopped that part out of the song, not even Mikael can save it.

I know Bloodbath is not a 100% serious band but that's still quite ironic.

It was definitely better than MP's vocals, but I still don't like that part regardless of who sings it. It just doesn't fit.

It sounds fine to me with MP on vocals. And clearly the audiences always dug it too. Would have been cool to have been there when Akerfeldt did it though.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

I was there when it happened. Even though I don't really mind MP doing that section, I think it was better. The reason he didn't sound as good as usual was because he had just ran on stage and probably wasn't completely prepared, but it was really awesome, and definitely warmed up the crowd as it was the first song on the night!

Never had anything against this part, and Åkerfeldt doing it was cool.

And his name is Mikael Åkerfeldt. "Å" is pronounced like how you'd say "oh" or "awe". Not really easy to explain when you don't have got the letter in English.

I have finally listened to the orignal and I have to say.....The original kicks ass, it has JLB singing his signature High vocals and it makes sense what he does, they could've added the ROAR! vocals after his part and lost nothing.

JLB needs to sing it the way JP wanted it, I bet you people would've loved it like that especially with the ROAR! after.
