Symphony X thread!
« on: April 29, 2009, 04:07:45 PM »
ITT we discuss all things Symphony X. Love them! Listening to Twilight in Olympus on spotify for the first time. This sounds interesting, as all other Sym X albums are!

Are they doing anything now? I don't wanna wait until 2012 for a new album :P

No doubt that Symphony X makes it on my top ten bands. I could comment about them for quite a while. :)

Michael Romeo's guitar work is just absurdly awesome. My jaw drops when I try to learn his work. Paradise Lost was such an amazing album. I truly believe the wait was very well worth it! The guitar tone on the album or eargasmic. /drool

I learned The Walls Of Babylon all the way through recently, minus the guitar solo. Once I mastered the song, it was so fun to just slide all over the guitar neck smoothly. The riffs flow together so nicely. I love that track. After learning it, for some reason the structure and order of the riffs slightly reminds me of the title track from Painkiller.

Twilight In Olympus was the first SX album I ever heard and they blew me away. TDWOT, V, The Odyssey and PL are all ranging from good to amazing but nothing quite touches the diversity and songwriting on TIO. Also, for me at least it is the album that is least cheesy.

The debut album gets overlooked easily by a lot of fans but if you manage to get over the poor production you will hear the best material they did until TDWOD came out. The vocals are really creative and powerful in his own way.

Oh and I think there's going to be a little bit of a wait because Russell Allen just had a baby girl in the fall.

I respect his decision to be a father first, and band leader second.

I love these guys, man!  Saw them a year ago at a night club and it reminded me of the movie "Rockstar" because Russell Allen's parents were standing about 10 Ft away from us in the pit as he introduced them.  I thought that was really cool.  It was a memorable night.

Really? That's awesome for him! This is probably good for us too because it will bring a new inspiration to him and will give some time for Romeo to work on the new album which could bring us something more diverse than PL (which was awesome but almost the whole album is just pounding metal with no rest at all).

Twilight in Olypus is their most under-rated album (next to Damnation Game). Even though Rullo wasn't present, the drums are still great and Romeo is as present as ever. It's just a really well balanced kick ass album
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

I am too an old school SX fan, I remember when you could only get their CD's as Japanese imports.
Divine Wings is my fave, but I like all up to the V album.
After that they lost some of their uniqueness for me, I prefer the more melodic and proggy sound
than the heavier thrusts of the last two albums.

Just wanted to say that Damnation Game is a damn (pun intended) good album.   Some seriously kickass songs.

I can't tell you how many times I've said this... but this is my favorite album. Yet a lot of people either don't have it or don't like the sound. It's Russell Allen before he got angry at everything.

Heh, sorry. I'm a broke student so I haven't bought it!

Their livealbum sounds incredible. Russell is flawless, never missing a note (granted I haven't heard all of it yet. Shut up :D)

I've always thought the official live album was terrible sounding.
Almost sub-par bootleg quality.

Yep, it's called Live On the Edge of Forever, and the quality is really crappy for an official release.  They play all of V: The New Mythology Suite plus a lot of other awesome songs (Of Sins and Shadows, Smoke and Mirrors, The Divine Wings of Tragedy etc.)

Symphony X is definitely one of my favourite bands, but I can't help but yearn for more from them. In some respects, they're almost a one-dimensional band, but when you listen to songs like Through the Looking Glass you realize that they have boundless potential that gets lost in their borderline death-prog songs.

But aside from that, Symphony X =  :tup

Twilight in Olympus is definitely good. It was worth it not having a 20+min epic so that V The New Mythology Suite could happen, because that is such a strong album. Smoke and Mirrors has the best intro and the best guitar/keyboard tradeoff ever!

They can make some very good emotional songs:
- Paradise Lost
- The Accolade II
and last, but not least, my fav evah from them:
- Candlelight Fantasia

Their heavy music is good too, but I got bowred of it. Now I need a pause.

And moreover, I think this band is really increasing. They always offer better and better stuff, and that's good for further albums!

Paradise Lost is the only album I've ever really listened to in full, but I'm getting kinda tired of it. I have all of their albums back til TDWOT, so I'll probably start exploring all those a bit more than I have in a while. A Fool's Paradise came up on shuffle the other day, and I really liked it, so...

Russell Allen is an absolute beast of a man, and he kills live to. They have a couple of fantastic songs (Odyssey and some of the PL tracks), but other than that they don't interest me much

When I met them, I laughed inside at the difference between him and Rullo. RA is a massive being, and Rullo is miniscule in comparison

Symphony X was my favorite band for about three years when I was 17 up until 20.

I just... grew out of them I guess. Saw them live many times, always delivered. They're still great, but not exactly my cup of tea anymore. It remains a Metalband, while my tastes have evolved in all kinds of directions, finding much more interesting bands in the process.

I still give V - The New Mythology Suite and The Odyssey a spin once in a while, great albums for the genre. I cannot STAND Paradise Lost though.

Symphony X are one of my favorite bands. I don't understand the shit they get about being so cheesy when there are so many more cheesier bands out there. SX pull off their fantasy lyrics really well, and in my opinion they don't sound cheesy at all. Who cares if they have a song about Medusa? It's an awesome rockin' song.

My favorite album of theirs is V: The New Mythology Suite, and I'm in the minority that actually liked Paradise Lost. It's one badass album, and although I like Russell's clean vocals more, he pulls off tasteful harsh vocals that don't completely suck... Like most harsh vocals do.
