Symphony X is an amazing band. They have some truly "epic" songs and I considered them up with Dream Theater in terms of good quality music.
Can't wait for the next CD. I really hope they go back to more of their progressive stuff and not more of their heavy stuff like from Paradise Lost.

I'd totally dig an album even heavier than PL.

But looks like i'm the only one who feels that way :)

Currently listening to:

Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here *****
Kamelot - Poetry For The Poisoned **
Les Discrets - Septembre Et Ses Dernières Pensées ***1/2
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing *****
Symphony X - The Odyssey ****1/2

I'm all for a heavier album, but I'd also like to hear more songs like The Accolade with Russell's softer singing.

Yeah, I always thought Accolade I and II were some of  SX's best work.

Awesome, hopefully it's as good or better than Paradise Lost.

Hell yeah!
 :metal

Personally, I'd rather see them strive towards a sound heard in Through the Looking Glass and The Divine Wings of Tragedy.

With Nuclear Blast (depending howm uch the label will affect the music), the sound will most likely stay heavy (Paradise Lost-heavy)

That's a shame.

Here's the latest news from the SX forum:

Quote
Just got off the phone with MJR; he wishes everyone a Happy New Year and reports that the writing of the new cd is progressing well. He says that the riffs are written and all the ideas are there, they're just trying different arrangement ideas right now. We talked about how we're back to the usual routine of trying to find new ways to say the same old 'the band is writing the cd', and he said "It's hard to say. Every day is different, we're just doing our thing & trying to make the tunes cool. You put something together one day and then come back the next day & listen to it; sometimes it's cool, & sometimes it sucks & you have to change things around." They're still hoping to be done with the cd by spring.

So it definitely sound like we're getting the album in the spring.  :metal
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

According to Michael Romeo yes there is. It's probably going to sound a lot like Paradise Lost since he said their going to be using a lot of ideas they couldn't fit onto PL.

Terrible news. I want them to do original proggy stuff instead of generic metal leftovers from PL :metal

Well, that doesn't mean that it's going to be all metal. Who knows? The stuff that wasn't used could have been more progressive. I'm going to reserve judgement until I hear the album, but I actually liked Paradise Lost, so I don't care either way

I love the intro to The Odyssey(the song). I hope Dream Theater works on something like that.

I hope not. They'll make it needlessly long most likely (Overture).

First listen to Symphony X right now. Listening to The Odyssey. Good so far (I'm on "Accolade II"). I'm excited for "The Odyssey" though since I recently read The Odyssey. What album should I go to next?

If you want metal that's going to crush your soul into a fine powder, go with Paradise Lost. If you want the awesome album with another 20 minute epic, go with Divine Wings of Tragedy.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Does PL have harsh vocals or something? What do you mean by soul-crushing metal? If you meant something similar to Train Of Thought compared to DT's discography then I'd probably go to that one.

The vocals on PL aren't any more harsh than The Odyssey. It's generally freakishly heavy, really fast, and just, well, soul-crushing. It's the heaviest stuff they've done, and it is amazing.

Alright well then that sounds like it'll cater to my musical interests more. Although, I am immensely looking forward to "The Odyssey" (on "King Of Terrors" right now). What is the rest of the other epic-containing album like, and also, sonatafanica, what's the one you recommended like?
