So, I got both Damnation Game and the self-titled today. Good stuff, and pretty underrated. (Self-titled got a 1.5 star rating on Allmusic, and Damnation Game got 2.)
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Damnation Game only got two stars? That sucks. I can understand why people would vote that way (it's far less metal than Paradise Lost or The Odyssey), but it's still better than two stars.

The Damnation Game is one of the few albums that I can rank a 10/10. But that's just me

Allmusic is a professional review site. It's not an aggregate place like Metacritic.

Yeah. If some band wrote the s/t now with good production people would probably praise it like hell. It's a great album and the singer has a great voice. Although I see how it would be hard for people to like him, he's a bit like John Arch and Allen mixed together.

Oh ok. Well, these "professionals" clearly don't know what they're talking about then :P

Yeah, allmusic is pretty harsh on this band. The only albums to score four stars or above were The Divine Wings of Tragedy and Paradise Lost. All the others got 3 stars or less.  >:(

On The Edge Of Forever turns a good album into a masterpiece.

That song stands out so much for me.

Amazing song.

I'm listening to The New Mythology Suite for the first time, gotta say it's amazing.
It's only my second S:X album to listen to after Paradise Lost which I also loved.

After V, you should get The Odyssey or Twilight in Olympus, and then The Damnation game and Divine Wings of Tragedy.

V is a prog Masterpiece. The others are more Metal.

The Odyssey might be the perfect mix though, Kind of like Six Degrees.

definitely. on their wikipedia page it says they're gathering material for a live dvd or cd. that would be awesome.

but i hope there isn't another five year wait between albums

Anyone else think that Domination and Panic Attack start off in a very similar way? Even the bass sounds similar.

I noticed that, I also noticed several other similarities with other DT and S:X songs.

So I have a very ambitious musical friend who is transcribing "The Odyssey" for performance in the fall of 2010.  It will have a 5-piece band as well as small orchestra... I'm playing keys.
VOTE IN THE BEATLES SURVIVOR!!!!!

Listen to sirbradford in all things Beatles :P

This is evil, but I went with bradford

So does anyone know what Symphony X are up to? They aren't touring or making a new album so are they working on something else or is this just a break?

I really hope SX gets a DVD out at least before they start working on their next album. It boggles me that they still, in all their years, have not put out a live DVD, being as acclaimed as they are in prog metal world.

As much as I love Symphony X, there's one thing that stops me from fully enjoy them and that is the god damn guitar tone that Romeo has. It sounds shit on albums and it sounds even worse live. He's a living example of how to use digital products like Line6 the WRONG way! Listen to Opeth to learn how to use it correctly! Or even better, use equipment like JP does. He always has a good, heavy tone that cuts through the mix and you can actually hear every note he plays.

/rant

To balance out this post - Russel Allan is probably my favorite singer of ALL TIME! One sexy beast of a man! :hefdaddy

They write some unique, catchy and amazing songs! V is one of my favorite albums of all time! They're all amazing musicians!

Their wikipedia page says they're gathering material for a DVD, but I don't know how accurate that is.

I agree somewhat. On albums I think his tone sounds good (he uses a lot of different amps when recording - Mesa, ENGL, etc.), but live I think he still uses the Line6 Vetta II (at least that's what he was using when I saw them in '05), and yeah, it sounded pretty weak. Even if you watch their performance on the Gigantour DVD, his tone doesn't cut through very well.

But, just out of curiosity, since when has Opeth used digital amps? Last time I saw em they were using Laney heads.
