Damn.

My fiancee and I just watched Casino on Monday and I was going to show her Goodfellas at some point (since they're basically spiritual sister movies). Maybe this'll give incentive to move up that time table.

One of the scenes that he was in that sticks with me is the scene in 'Hannibal' when he's playing  Paul Krendler.....and Hannibal makes him eat his own brain. Freaking trippy.....anyway.....sad to hear he passed away but the report says it was in his sleep so hopefully it was a peaceful passing with no pain.

It's weird because I can count on one hand the number of films I have seen with Liotta, yet he was the main character in what is more days than not my all-time favorite film, Goodfellas.

R.I.P.

While he is definitely the driving force behind that film in an outstandingly masterful performance, he isn't even the "main character" in terms of billing, or the actor who is most celebrated for his performance in that film.

He was so great in Goodfellas.

That movie came out when I was a teenager working in a VHS video store (eventually got bought out by blockbuster). Everybody loved it.

I don't want to get into a long debate over it, but Henry Hill is the main character in Goodfellas.  I don't know anyone can argue otherwise.  Yes, De Niro got the higher billing because he was the biggest name, and Pesci was the only one to win an Oscar, but that doesn't change the fact that Henry Hill is the main character.

No question about it. It was based on his perspective the entire movie. Final scene, Him standing there in witness protection after ratting out everyone. I remember Henry Hill used to call in to the Howard Stern show and other callers would call in and call him a rat.  :lol

If looks could kill, that one Paulie gave Henry in court after Henry pointed him out for members of the jury would have dropped Henry instantly.

And when Jimmy strangles Morrie with the telephone cord and the latter's wig partially comes off, I am still convinced that that was Ray Liotta laughing, not the character he was playing.  :lol :lol

Haha yes! The wig falling off was accidental and I also think Rays laugh was genuine. Yeah, the look Paulie gave him were daggers. Such an iconic movie. I grew up watching The Godfather and Scarface and I still think Goodfellas was better. I’ll rate my fave mob movies.

1) Goodfellas. 2) Scarface. 3) The Godfather. 4) Bronx Tale. 5) Casino.

If it sounded like I was marginalizing his role in Goodfellas, I completely didn't make my point well. I know that top billing doesn't equal most important character or most screen time. I was trying to say that despite not having top billing (which often goes to the biggest name despite prominence in the film - think Brando in Superman), and despite not even being nominated for an Oscar, how many of us thought "Oh yeah, he was awesome in Goodfellas" when they saw the news? His commanded our attention every single time he was on screen, which is a LOT in a 2.5 hour long movie, while being surrounded by many talented actors.

I’d put Scarface last and Casino much higher. But good list.

I was saying Ray was in my favorite mob movie period.  :)

I will remember him best from Wild Hogs.  :metal

I loved him in the Mob flicks but his performance in Wild Hogs was pure fun.

Fun fact about Wild Hogs - the first time that the main actors met Ray was during the bar scene. The directors wanted to keep thing as real as possible but they also said that Ray would stay in character for much of the movie which would make for tense moments when they were not filming. And now the I think about it, his character  in Wild Hogs reminds me of Joe Pesci in Goodfellas or even Casino. Hmmmm....... ???

Goodfellas and the first two Godfather films are 1a, 1b and 1c for me.

Scarface is good fun, but it's like watching a trainwreck.

Big fan of Casino as well, but I think it gets a bit tedious in the back half.  Sharon Stone screaming her head off for about 15 minutes straight got exhausting.

I only saw Bronx Tale once, but it was good. I need to watch that one again.

Even though it is probably more a cop movie than a mob one, The Departed ranks pretty high for me.

Was struggling to think what else I've seen him in. Forgot about Copland somehow. Solid performance.

The Departed was absolutely fantastic! The cast was EPIC.

Unlawful Entry was good. He plays a good creepy psychotic cop. He was also in Date Night with Mark Wahlberg, Tina Fey and Steve Carell playing Mob boss Joe Miletto. Funny movie!

I did see parts of that movie on cable a long time ago as I was flipping through the channels.  I vaguely remember that it was quite amusing.  :)

I grew up with his performance as Tommy Vercetti, the main character in GTA Vice City. A major role in gaming for sure. Cutting edge cinematics and voice acting for back in the day. Over here every guy my age played Vice City.

Saw Goodfellas for the first time a couple of years back, excellent film.

RIP
