Road Trip advice?
« on: August 28, 2011, 01:30:05 PM »
Ok. So sometime in Oct or Nov I am going to be going from LA up to an hour north of San Fran. I've made this trip before (with my ex, before I had my license) and back then money wasn't an issue. Now it is. Yes it's only an 8 hour drive but it's going to be my first time driving it alone (I may have one friend come with me but if she can't I am going alone). Any advice on saving my hard earned $$ on this trip? Plus does anyone in Cali know whether gas is cheapest on the 101, 5 or 99?

thanks guyz
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I know there is a site where you can see best gas prices and plan it on your route, I think MapQuest might do it.

As for the trip, make sure you have your fluids checked on your car and just stay on the highway. No way to really save for it other than just saving for it.

I used to head down to Miami from Gainesville twice a month 6 hours each way and I loved driving it, hell I took a trip from Canada to Florida in January and it was great.

I would NEVER follow this advice myself because I love speeding far too much, but I think if you keep it between something like 45 and 65 you get the best gas mileage.

And check the air in your tires before you leave and at least once on the road.

Keep your revs as low as you can while still maintaining a reasonable speed. I've saved so much gas keeping it in a higher gear than usual and watching my revs.

I can't remember off the top of my head but I think 65 was the overall the best speed to stay at, that would be terrible though, everything seems so slow moving.

I don't have any financial advice, and based on your situation, no advice that would be relevant to you. But I do have general advice for all road trips. If you have someone in the car who needs to piss, PLEASE be sympathetic of that. Pull over and let them piss somewhere, even if you just stopped somewhere. Waiting over an hour in the car to piss because your friends refuse to stop and you have an overactive bladder isn't very fun.

Yeah, Id say 5 to 580, but check. Scenery sucks on 5, but its a straight shot.

Good luck going 65 on I-5.  Posted speed limit is 70 and you'll be hard pressed to find people following it.

That's generally the fastest route, but you'll want to avoid the 580 stretch during commute hours.

I wouldn't worry about saving money on gas. Staying around 65 and using cruise control will help, but save on food by packing lunch and snacks. And pack water -- buying small bottles on the road is a huge waste of money.

Well it's about 1800 miles so if you did it straight with more than one person it'd be about 27 hours but I did it alone twice and made it last three days each time. GOD SO MUCH FUN. You can't beat eating MREs on the bank of the Mississippi, sleeping in dog hair, German bakery/gift shops, schizophrenic numerology guys, lap dances and Adami's leather couch.

And that was all in the same hour.

haha sounds like an awesome time.

I always loved my drives to miami although they were nothing compared to yours. I'd put on some music and just cruise in the middle of the night.
