5.8 Earthquake in Virginia
« on: August 23, 2011, 12:00:44 PM »
My work building shook for about 5 seconds, nothing too bad, but kinda weird since I'm from an area that isn't exactly known for quakes.

Funny thing is that I've been close to two building explosions that have caused where I was to shake, and when this happened I just went "well, it looks like we've had another building explode."

My cat was freaking out, but it wasn't too bad.

the east coast, apparently, is a ticking time bomb for a big one. There's a huge fault line in Crystal Caverns (near Reading, PA) that could explode at any time in the future. Weird shit.

As a Cali boy and veteran of many earthquakes, including the '89 Loma Prieta quake, I can say with total confidence that they still scare the crap out of me.

Edit- Wow, 5.8, that's a solid fucker, hope everyone is OK.

I guy i know in PA apparently felt it. Fun shit ain't it?
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I felt a small aftershock when I was on the can. I thought it was the Little Caesar's but apparently not. I'm about 25 miles from Raleigh, NC right now so I wonder if this is as far south as the aftershocks have traveled.

5.8 in Richmond, yeah. My office building shook pretty heavily. My phone is now going off with messages and Facebook is lighting up.

I'm about to run home and check on my dog. I have friends as far north as New Jersey and as far south as North Carolina that felt it.

It wasn't felt that bad here in Southern Maryland... I guess. I have no experience to compare it to, so I dunno if that was "bad" or not :lol
Nothing's damaged in the house anyway, like one thing fell over. Don't know what's going on anywhere else nearby right now.

Still, that was scary as shit having never experienced one before.

You know what you need to do now, right? Go break into the house of one of your friends and place a whole bunch of their items/knick knacks all over the floor to make it look like a way more severe urfkwake.

Those close to the epicenter- How long was it?  I remember '89 was over a minute, and I was about 40 miles north of it.

Weird. It's like tallying up votes from all the precincts. I always thought they just took readings from what ever seismograph read the highest.

Felt it here on Long Island, NY.  My first earthquake.  The lady's wind chime at the desk next to me started to go off, lol.

5.9, that's gonna cause some damage, anywhere, but especially in places that aren't retrofitted for it like where I live.

If I had to guess, I'd say it lasted a good 30 seconds for me that's what she said.

But then again I had just been woken up by it, so I don't know.

My friend lives about 90 miles from the epicenter, and she said some things fell off the shelves at her pharmacy, but nothing more than that.

This is just a guess, but it's probably an aggregate of several readings, which would change as they are reported and interpreted.
