Zomg, now we know where your sig comes from! Yay!

I love Yes, but I could never get into Tales. Too much at once for me.

Edit: I'm quoting your update because I hate when important posts are the last on a page.

14. Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

one of the most grandiose, epic prog albums to ever be created (or rather dreamt up). this album has an extremely divided fan opinion, but i am clearly in the camp that thinks it is great. the entire album totally sounds like the cover looks, which is always something i loved about it.  a year ago (or even up to a few months ago), i was still considering this a top 5 album, but after reevaluating my music tastes, Tales has definitely fallen a bit. but 14 is not a bad spot at all.

Favorite Movements: "Ritual", "The Revealing Science of God"

13. Brand New - Daisy

Daisy is one of the more overlooked albums that has come out in recent years. it is extremely consistent, almost every song has a dark, heavy, brooding vibe to it. the sound processing, recording, layering, mixing also results in some of the most lively, present sounding guitar i have ever heard. the condensing of the bands sound into what came to be on this album showed that sometimes taking one idea and running with it can work extremely well.  production is also at top notch here, and one of the more memorable things about Daisy is the peculiar clips that bookend the album.

Favorite Songs: "Noro", "Daisy", "In A Jar", "Sink", "You Stole", "At The Bottom"

Everyone on this board needs to hear Brand New. There's another album of theirs higher than Daisy on his list.

The only Brand New song I'm aware of is Sic Transit Gloria. Cool song, with an even cooler video.

Well, if we take all these things and we bury them fast
And we pray that they turn into seeds, to roots and then grass
It'd be all right, it's all right, it'd be easier that way

Have to agree with you there. Listened to it once and I just didn't 'get' it. I was however out and about, so maybe another listen when I'm at home with no distractions will give me a different take on it.

16. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

My favorite Genesis album. Peter Gabriel's lyrics and storytelling on this album are pretty much unmatched. Also, the keyboard arrangements on this album were pretty flawless, seeing as Tony Banks really can't do any wrong. To top it off, Steve Hackett's guitar tone was at its darkest and crunchiest, which makes this album sound extremely dark and foreboding.

Favorite Songs: "Carpet Crawlers", "Counting Out Time", "Hairless Heart", "In The Cage", "Anyway", "Riding The Scree"

15. Radiohead - Kid A

I love every Radiohead album (within reason *coughPabloHoneycough*) but I love Kid A most of all. it was a huge grower album, taking an extremely long time for me to dig it, but once it really clicked with me it immediately became my favorite album of theres. Not a single weak song on the album, and everytime I hear it I am brought back to the first time it was shown to me at a summer camp a long time ago.

Favorite Songs: "How To Disappear Completely", "Idioteque", "Everything In Its Right Place", "The National Anthem"
This update is amazing. Both one of my favorite albums ever :) with Kid A in top 5

I've listened to it a couple of times, and it's a good album and without a doubt one of the most interesting and unique things I've heard. It just doesn't do much for me.

I kind of am too, considering how much I love it. I've just been losing my interest in straight up prog over these past few months and realized that it would be unfair to just keep it in my top 10 because it used to be.

12. Pink Floyd - Animals

I can still remember the first time I heard this album. My Dad brought me to the record store and I used some of my money from chores or w/e to buy this album. I got home and was so blown away when I saw that there was only 5 tracks on the album, two of which were very short. I remember listening to this album over and over and over again to memorize and ingrain every single guitar, bass, drum, synth, vocal part into my mind. Definitely the album that blew wide open the doors of Prog for me.

Favorite Songs: "Pigs (Three Different Ones)", "Sheep"

11. The Mars Volta - Frances the Mute

Where Animals blew open the doors of Prog, this album took that feeling to a whole new level of appreciation. The shit that is on this album is nothing short of mindblowing. If you listen to this album with the title track put back into the tracklisting it becomes a 90 minute choatic, melodic and hypnotic experience that is completely different to any other kind of music listening experience there is. The band covers so much group that it almost seems impossible that they could ever rival an album with a magnitude such as Frances the Mute.

Favorite Songs: "Frances the Mute", "Cassandra Gemini"
