Beard growing
« on: August 22, 2011, 03:40:54 AM »
Does anyone here have decent experience with beard-growing? I'd like to try, but I'm not sure whether I genetically have what it takes yet. What are some tips out the gate?

Also, if people out there think they can tell whether I'll ever have a decent based on pics of me at my current states (about a week in without shaving) I can post them.

Edit: OK, for reference (again, this is about a week without shaving, maybe more):

Front- https://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff421/perpetualjoe/Internets/2011-08-22141532.jpg
Left- https://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff421/perpetualjoe/Internets/2011-08-22173727.jpg
Right- https://i1235.photobucket.com/albums/ff421/perpetualjoe/Internets/2011-08-22173706.jpg

My issues basically are: 1.) I've got no mustache-area action, 2.) It actually hurts in some areas, I guess because I'm not used to thicker hairs being there, 3.) I have a big meeting next week, and since this'll probably still be in the "bum" stage by then I'm gonna probably have to shave it anyway, even if someone thinks it has potential :(

Damn, I wish I could grow a beard. I only shave once a week because the hair doesn't grow enough. :(

I have a beard. I don't recall doing anything to get that beard. In fact, I believe it requires doing nothing at all.

Not for everyone. I'm not sure whether I can actually grow one, or if I'm just doomed to a live of being able to grow nothing more than wispy fuzz on my face.

I used to just refuse to shave 'cause I thought it'd be really cool to have a proper beard, but it just looked rubbish. Really weird. At the time I was thinking "this is kind of a beard! i am well cool!" but in retrospect I tend to go "what was I thinking?"

What I'll recommend is shaving more, but not in the sense that you're thinking. I'm not going with the old myth of "ohhh if you shave more it'll grow back faster," 'cause that's nonsense. What I eventually did, was shave the beard's shape before the hair had properly grown.

Not shaving at all gets fig. 1.1. (NB: quite drunk.)

fig 1.1 - man with crap beard

Shaving a little bit at a time gets fig 1.2 followed by fig 1.3.

fig 1.2 - man with okay beard.

fig 1.3 - actual beard.

No matter how shit your beard-growing energy (my hair is very thin and light, so mine is awful), giving a beardy shape to whatever facial hair you do have will give the impression of a proper-ish beard. From then on you don't have to worry about it looking rubbish - just shave the rest and it'll always look alright.

Also, man have I put on weight between 1.2 and 1.3. I really hope that's just the angle of my head.

See rob, up until now everyone has told me to absolutely not try to shave until after at least a month of not shaving. I can see the reason in that, but, then again, that's an awfully long time to go around looking like a bum. You don't seem to have suffered much by doing the opposite.

Updated OP with pics.

Ah! I've never really asked - I just sort of did it. Maybe it's a massive beard faux-pas, I dunno. Gather a few sources definitely. I think the second picture is probably the more flattering of the three though - shit hair aside (I'd just come off a flight ALRIGHT!?) - so I don't see it being a problem. It's the route I'd go.

Although, your facial hair actually looks fairly beardy from where I'm standing. Thick and wiry. That's not too bad after a week. Better than mine!

That's kinda why I want the beard, honestly. A full beard pretty much gives you a pass to have crazy hair, imo.

I can grow an epic neck beard but that's abut it.

Rob's approach is one I completely agree with. If I just stop shaving, the hair grows all over the place and feels really itchy, particularly on the neck. So I shave in into something that is more shapely. I don't even have a beard as such, but it means that even at only the stubble-level, it looks smarter because it has shape.

The only thing I tried out in that context was something similar to what Mike Mangini has/had. Once I saw that it didn't suit me, I shaved it off right away. In short: Beards don't suit me, so I'm mostly clean-shaven (save for the once-in-a-while 2-day shadow).
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

I despise beards, at least on me, for a while now. every once in a while i skip a week or two, depending on how many fucks i haven't given, and then go back to clean off like usual. i think it's quite simple. not everyone must have a beard.

I get an ample level of growth.
But.
I can't get the jawbone line-shave-down-clean the neck line..correct. I have a long face so it looks silly like beard stickers on the side of my face or something.

I grow my facial hair often, I love toying around and having different styles all the time.  My bears is good, except it doesn't grow just around my soul patch but is quite good everywhere else.  I wish I could grow a kickass ZZ Top style beard though.

Depends entirely on the person. Some people just look awful with facial hair. Some people look a lot better with it.

I can't grow a beard for shit.

All I can get is baby hairs in the mustache area, and scattered pube-like hairs on my chin, and a LOAD of pube-like hairs all over my neck.

Like, my neck grows more hair than all of my face.

I think I'm in the minority around here that thinks short hair and clean shaven looks better for the vast majority of men than long hair and beards. But I don't really give a shit what people do with their face. Whatever makes you look good to yourself is fine by me.

Beards  :coolio

I'm very rarely clean shaven, it makes me look about 12 years old  ;D I tend to let it grow for a while, then shave it down to short stubble. I don't really sculpt it or try and keep it tidy while growing it. It's been a while since I've grown it quite long and thick and I've never really left it as long as I'd want it to go because usually some event happens where I need to shave it, like a wedding or something.

Most people really have to put quite a lot of time into it if they want it to be nice and long/thick though. The darker your hair, the easier it seems to be - one of my mates has jet black hair and he probably gets hairier than me in a couple of days than I do in a week  :lol On the other hand, another guy I know with quite light hair struggles to get any sort of growth.

Oh and if you've got any Scottish/Irish heritage, be prepared for at least a little bit of ginger coming through  :D
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

That might explain my all-too orange beard. Not that I'm aware of any Scottish heritage. Can't say I've traced back more than three generations, mind.

I can grow a very beastly beard. No shave November is one of my favorite things to celebrate.

This is 10 days of growth, maybe less.
