Suggest me something!
« on: August 21, 2011, 04:10:17 PM »
DT is my favourite band and I have only a few friends who also like it (or metal for that matter). So this forum was really the first time I came across a lot of DT fans. Looking around at the General Music Discussion section of the forum I found a lot of interesting bands, but the truth is I don't really know where to start.
So this topic is meant to help me get to know good new bands.

In order to recommend something, you probably should know somethings about my musical taste:
1- As aforementioned, DT is my favourite band. Unfortunately, I don't know a whole lot of other progressive bands...
2- I like many metal bands, such as: Symphony X, Circus Maximus, Angra, Avantasia, DragonForce, Elvenking, Epica, Kamelot, Mechanical Poet, the softer side of Opeth, Sonata Arctica...
3- I also like lots of pop bands, such as: Green Day, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Nickelback, My Chemical Romance, The Beatles, Adelle, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Yellowcard, Muse's latest album...
4- Some other bands I like which are either rock or I don't know how to classify: The Who, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Marillion, Queen, The Reign of Kindo, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Story of the Year, Trapt, Death Cab for Cutie, Thrice's The Alchemy Index (not too big on their other albums)...
5- I also like modern musical's soundtracks, such as: Spring Awakening, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Disney's Musicals, Wicked, Next to Normal, Memphis...
6- I generally like classical music, but my favourite composers are: Debussy, Elgar, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Ma Sicong, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, Saint-Säens, Villa-Lobos, Vivaldi and Beethoven.

From that, I guess you have more than plenty to guess at what I might like...
I recommend that suggestions of bands come with one or two albums I should start with and also an explanation of why I might/should like it.
Thank you for your ideas!

P.S. Heard about The Flower Kings the other day, does anyone have a suggestion for a starting album?

I think you'd like Shadow Gallery a lot. Check out Tyranny and Room V.

If you want less generic prog metal, Pain of Salvation is a good band.

One band missing there is Rush. They're not prog metal, and only a chunk of their material is actually prog. Check out Moving Pictures first. 2112 is their best song, and one of the best songs ever.

Oh, and Porcupine Tree. I'm not too big on them, but you might end up enjoying them. In Absentia or Lightbulb Sun should be the albums of choice.

Oh. And Haken. Check out Haken's debut Aquarius from 2010. One of the recently best albums to come out of the prog scene.

Wow, that ought to keep me busy (and poor...) for quite a lot of time. Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far! But more suggestions are appreciated still!
Some of the bands mentioned I already knew and either liked/disliked (I obviously did not put every band I like in the list...), but some others I had never heard of but seem pretty interesting.

Any recommendations for The Pineapple Thief?

Btw, it is really a whole lot more helpful if you suggest an album or song instead of just naming the band. A lot of these bands have many albums out already so it's quite hard to know where to start...

Pagan's Mind
Transatlantic
Planet X and all Derek Sherinian solo works
Scar Symettry
Cloudscape
Ayreon

Start with that.

Good suggestions here, also;

Fates Warning
Eden's Curse
Evergrey
Gamma Ray
Helloween
Edguy
Savatage
Last Tribe
Redemption
Stratovarius
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

In Absentia.

In Absentia is easily one of PT's worst albums, though I have to admit that it's probably a good starting-point. (kinda has several type of songs)

To everyone recommending Porcupine Tree:
I listened to Lightbulb Sun yesterday, but didn't really like it. Given that so many people think so highly of this band, I'd like to give it another shot. So which CD may I like if Lightbulb Sun was not my cup of tea?

Cold Fairyland... as long as you don't mind the singing in Mandarin.

Try the album "Seeds On The Ground" or Lin Di's solo album "Bride In Legend". I think you'll find both to be pretty unique.

Also: with PTree, try Fear Of A Blank Planet or Up The Downstair.
This is as exciting as superluminal neutrinos. The sexy thing is that this actually exists :D

As for Porcupine Tree, do Fear of a Blank Planet instead first.

Based on your #3 bullet, have you tried old Queensryche? You'd probably dig Operation:Mindcrime and Empire.

inb4 Jimmy tells me it sucks

It does not suck, but it has 0 flow whatsoever, and very few songs that stand-out.
By normal-standards it's a great album, by PT-standards it is fairly weak.

It has an excellent mix of prog and pop.
I felt its length in quite a few places.
