I've been hearing a lot about Soilwork. What's their best album? I'll give it a shot sometime.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

For my money, Natural Born Chaos is a great starting point. They are thrashier going backwards from there, and a bit more melodic going forward. Also, Devin Townsend produced it, and you can tell. Most of their stuff is great (and their current drummer is better) but to me it's the best snapshot of what the band is all about. Most memorable songwriting as well. After that, if you want to go more proggy, definitely The Panic Broadcast. Stabbing the Drama and Sworn to a Great Divide are a little more mainstream, but still really, really good.

I've known about them since you were literally shitting your diapers (yes even before 2007) and they've got their moments but just have too much of their material comprised of stuff that's fast and heavy without actually being compelling to my ears. Kinda like a better Slayer imo.
If you are implying that Machine Head is better than Slayer, I think I might have to leave you.

Although I'm not particularly knocked out by either, I'd lean toward Slayer in all honesty since I really have trouble seeing Machinehead as any more than a band that's heroes to so many metalheads I've known in real life that place an unrealistically high priority on heaviness over things like melody, song development, avoiding crippling sameyness, dynamics, etc.

I'm not against Slayer and I respect your taste. As someone whose metal journey went Metallica>Pantera>Megadeth>Death>DT>Cynic>Symphony X>Spiral Architect>Opeth>fuckingeverythingelse, what do you think would be a good starting point for me?

Fragments of D-Generation is definitely one of the best Melodic Death albums EVER. This band is awesome, not only because their amazing riffs, their incredible solos, their consistent albums, but also because Björn Strid.

The Isolation Game? The few tracks I've heard are pretty good. I recall Structural Wound, title track and Building an Empire of Dust as kick-ass

The isolation game is awesome, but after the title track there aren't many songs i find myself playing often.

My personal favorite DM album is Mind Tricks specifically the 2011 reissue.
I love Ringside Seat To Human Tragedy (mostly because it has Chistian Alvestam on it, who happens to be one of my favorite vocalists)

Might look into the new one.

I've seen that reissue of Mind Tricks but haven't picked it up.  I definitely will knowing that it has Christian on it!

Though they're often mislabeled as deathcore, The Black Dahlia Murder definitely deserves a mention in this thread.

So I've been listening to Mercenary quite a bit lately. If anyone that's heard them has yet to hear their album 11 Dreams, I highly suggest you give it a listen, i personally consider it to be their best album (follwed closely by their newest album Metamorphosis and The Hours That Remain).

Agreed entirely.  Firesoul is probably my favorite Mercenary song.

Cool thread, by the way.  Some bands I love that I haven't seen mentioned yet are In Mourning, In vain, and Insomnium, but I guess the former two are more like progressive death metal.

Major bump here to post about a melodeath band I've been listening to a ton lately

Anyone familiar with Kalmah? They were mentioned on the previous page but that was loooooong before I started listening to them.

Fans of Children of Bodom would definitely like this band, as they have a very similar sound (if not somewhat better imo)

Their album 12 Gauge (See songs: Swampwar, Rust Never Sleeps, and Hook the Monster) is definitely worth a listen to, but to be quite honest you can't go wrong with any of their albums (even their debut Swamplord is superb)

Yeah, I heard of Kalmah while I was listening to CoB.  I only ever listened to their first album, Swamplord, and it's pretty baller.

Listening to Natural Born Chaos (and Soilwork in general) for the first time. It's pretty good.

Creative difference I think the article said.   No original guitar players now, this is really gonna hurt the band, I don't see how they can successfully recover.

Just listened to it.  It's decent, but sounds exactly like anything off Panic Braodcast.  The instrumental section was great though.  Will see how it goes after multiple listens.
