Yeah great news played 'Vessels' today, such an amazing album.
Great songs, death and some prog and killer mix, master and production.
One of the best sound albums in the last few years.

Some of the melodies throughout this album are absolutely sublime.

This is one of my favorite genres, though my particular favored variants of it have dissipated quite a bit in popularity in the past couple decades.  I'm more into the old Swedish variants (earlier In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, as well as more modern-ish stuff like Soilwork, Scar Symmetry, Solution .45).  I'm more selective about the Finnish doomier or neoclassical variants (Insomnium or Children of Bodom, for example, who are good, but not quite favorites), though I especially enjoy Amorphis, and Noumena, who are something of a hybrid.  A lot of my absolute top ones are rather under the radar now though, like Mercenary, Nightrage, Daylight Dies, Eventide, Satariel (especially their album Phobos & Deimos with Messiah Marcolin of Candlemass guesting), and Deadlock.

Dark Tranquillity part ways with their drummer and bass player...

Losing Anders Jivarp is pretty significant. He was one of the founders, wrote a bunch of songs and certainly was an important part of their sound. Reading the band's statement, it all seems amicable.

He was a really underrated drummer.  I'm hoping that his songwriting void may force/allow Chris and Johan to contribute more, it could reinvigorate their sound.

The fifth Be'lakor album Coherence releases on October 29th.

Hidden Window: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYZQVgL84rA

Stylistically this is probably closer to Stone's Reach than anything that's come after it. Pretty cracking song.

I thought it was amazing.

As I said in the other thread, I've been spinning this too, and I agree it's a very good slab of melodic death/doom. I'm especially enjoying the opener (The Awakening), the mid-point (The very sorrowful The Loss) and the title-track closer(15 minutes and it works!)

Not to go off-topic in this thread, but since you seem to enjoy metal that has a good amount of "gothic/dark" in it, what do you think of Paradise Lost, which are among the forefathers of the whole genre? I don't recall seeing you comment on them in my short time here.

I've never really listened to them. They were sent to me in a roulette a few years ago, and I don't think I was crazy about it. I can go back to it after my roulette.

What's the cliff's notes on those roulettes?  I see them being posted in all the time, but I don't read them, and when I glance in it looks too confusing to spend more time trying to decipher.

The host announces the roulette, and lays out the rounds.

People join and send a song or songs for the round.

The host scores them.

After a certain number of rounds, there is a winner with the most points.

I'd love to hear your thoughts if you do. There's plenty of different phases in Paradise Lost's discography, so it's definitely worth exploring - and I'd be happy to "help". I guess there is a thread about them on DTF (not very long, I'm afraid) - might be worth reconvening there when it's time  ;)

I haven't gotten around to hearing it yet. Your comments are promising. I can't say I have a deep knowledge of OG's discography, but my favorite of what I know is probably New World Shadows, lots of cool songs and melodies in there. Very good band. I did enjoy The Burning Cold quite a bit, I'll try and give the latest a listen soon...
