Is there a way to play AVI files in a Blu Ray player?
« on: August 20, 2011, 01:53:07 PM »
I know I can burn files to a DVD disc and have them play in a DVD or blu ray player, but in doing so, it makes the files so huge that I can only fit about an hour or 2 worth onto one DVD before the quality is to degraded to even bother.  If I could do it in AVI format or something, I could probably fit 4 times that amount onto one disc.  Is there some other format that can be burned onto a blank DVD and played in either a DVD or Blu ray player without having to waste 4 or 5 discs to keep the quality high?

I don't know much about this, but can't you just save them to a flash drive?

As far as I am aware most modern dvd players should just play the avis on a standard data disc.

It doesn't play the AVI if I burn it as a data disc with a bunch of AVI on it.  It only seems to play if I tell Nero to make a DVD Video which converts it to some other format that takes up about 4x the space.
I updated the firmware on the blu-ray player to the latest version and still no luck

DIVX/XVID support is becoming fairly standard on dvd players.  I'd be surprised if a modern bluray player wouldn't get along with them,  and since that's what everything you download is encoded with,  it's pretty convenient and seamless.  I don't know if Bill has added XVID support to the xbox yet or not.  I try to keep mine offline as much as possible, so I'm probably a dashboard update or two behind at any given moment.

As of a couple of months ago 90% of "video files" I download are .mkv...

Fourth one? Do you keep it encased in a plastic box with no vents, like the demo units at Best Buy?

They've always been pieces of shit.  They only seem to have worked the bugs out in the last year or so.  Average lifespan before the Jasper models was about one year.

I guess I was one of the lucky few. Had my X-box for three or four years now. No problems. In fact, my buddy's PS3 got the yellow light equivalent of the red ring and his 360 is still going strong.
