Your favorite artists based off the three best albums
« on: August 19, 2011, 12:31:53 PM »
Do this: take every artist in the world, eliminate everything they have ever done except for your three favorite albums, and then rank your favorites.  Feel free to list said three albums, too. ;)

My top 10:

1. Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall and Wish You Were Here)
2. Rush (Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Counterparts)
3. Porcupine Tree (Lightbulb Sun, Stupid Dream and Deadwing)
4. Dream Theater (Awake, Images and Words and Scenes from a Memory)
5. Radiohead (In Rainbows, Kid A and OK Computer)
6. Transatlantic (SMPTe, Bridge Across Forever and The Whirlwind)
7. The Flower Kings (Flower Power, Paradox Hotel and Space Revolver)
8. Devin Townsend (Terria, Addicted and Ghost)
9. The Beatles (Abbey Road, The White Album and Sgt. Pepper's)
10. Dave Matthews Band (Before These Crowded Streets, Crash and Under the Table and Dreaming)

For the record, 8 of those 10 would be in my all-time top 11, with Transatlantic and DMB being the two exceptions.

I've never heard that (it might actually be my favourite studio album) but I've always heard of BTCS being considered the unequivocal peak of their career. Oh well, guess it's not quite so set in stone.

You must be talking to some really goofy people, because Stand Up and Everyday are pretty much universally acknowledged as their two worst albums.

So happy to see someone mention Before These Crowded Streets as their favorite DMB album.

It's incredible.  And a top 20 all-time album in my book. :tup :tup

1) Savatage - Streets: A Rock Opera, Dead Winter Dead, Edge of Thorns (my top 3 Sava albums are kind of arbitrary because they just have so many amazing records)

2&3) Dream Theater - Images and Words, Awake, Scenes from a Memory

2&3) Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy, Twilight in Olympus, V - The New Mythology Suite

4) Queensryche - Rage for Order, Operation: Mindcrime, Empire (due to the drastic decline in the quality of QR albums over the years,  they would not even appear in my normal top 10 bands list)

5) Balance of Power - Book of Secrets, Ten More Tales of Grand Illusion, Perfect Balance

6) Kamelot - Epica, The Black Halo, Ghost Opera

7) Epica - Consign to Oblivion, The Divine Conspiracy, Design Your Universe

8) Nightwish - Oceanborn, Century Child, Once

9) Within Temptation - Enter, Silent Force, The Heart of Everything (haven't heard Unforgiving yet)

10) Ayreon - The Dream Sequencer, Flight of The Migrator, 01011001

dredg - (El Cielo, Catch Without Arms, The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion)
Opeth - (Blackwater Park, Still Life, Ghost Reveries)
Sigur Rós - (( ), Ágætis Byrjun, Takk..., Með Suð)

I couldn't decide on a 10th.

Also this pretty much ended up being a top 10 bands list overall.

Wow, this is difficult! Very cool thread idea btw.

Ok, here goes - bands in order, and the three albums in order (left-to-right):

1. Queensryche (Operation:Mindcrime; Rage for Order; Promised Land)
2. Dream Theater (Scenes from a Memory; Images & Words; Awake)
3. Electric Light Orchestra (Time; Out of the Blue; A New World Record)
4. Faith No More (The Real Thing; Angel Dust; King for a Day... Fool for a Lifetime)
5. The Dear Hunter (Act III; Act II; The Color Spectrum)
6. They Might Be Giants (Factory Showroom; Apollo 18; The Spine)
7. Queen (A Kind of Magic; A Night at the Opera; Innuendo)
8. Heart (Desire Walks On; Heart; Bad Animals)
9. Pink Floyd (The Wall; Dark Side of the Moon; A Momentary Lapse of Reason)
10. Def Leppard (Hysteria; Pyromania; High and Dry)

It was interesting to see how some favorite bands don't make it and the order changing on others. I feel like Porcupine Tree probably belongs here, but I only really know In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet so far.
