Implode's Song Roulette - The RESULTS are IN
« on: August 07, 2011, 10:45:13 AM »
Welcome to Implode's Song Roulette!

This roulette is pretty straight forward.

The contestants are:

-Cup
-H
-RaphaelRaven
-Nekov
-Ravenheart
-orcus116
-Iarwain
-YtseBitsySpider
-energythief

There will be 8 rounds.

1. Short and Sweet
2. Lovably Light
3. Hella Heavy
4. Incredible Instrumental
5. Can Listen Only Once
6. Before my Time
7. Round of Second Chances
8. Anything and Everything

The parameters of these rounds will be explained in detail as the rounds come up. Each member will have up to 24 hours after the I post the round to submit a song, but I'll start listening as soon as all are in, of course. PM me if you need an extension. I'll be using a song rating system from 1 to 5, 5 being the highest/best. The rating applied to a submitted song will yield an equal number of points. Highest amount of points at the end wins!

https://www.last.fm/user/Implode573

I only got Last.fm within the past few months, so I haven't had a chance to scobble my entire collection, but I'd say it's good enough to get an idea. Generally I consider myself to have a very open mind about music. I'll listen to anything, but keep in mind a few things as you're submitting songs. All ratings will be completely subjective to me. While I have a hard time saying any genre of music objectively sucks certain sounds, such as modern pop, screaming vocals, and modern country don't exactly do it for me. However, feel to submit whatever you want if you're confident I'll like it. Also, as I already have a large collection of soundtracks and classical music, there's no need to send me any of that. If you send me a song that I already know, I'll notify you and let you pick another song at no penalty. After all, I'm trying to discover music that is mostly new to me.

Good luck to all!

The first round is part of a bunch of over used themes:

1. Short and Sweet!

Submit a song that is less than 4 minutes in length!

GOGOGO!

You know? I think the music I listen to has changed my perception of what a short song is.

The other day I had about 3 minutes before I had to leave so I thought: "Oh, I'll just put on a short song before I go".

Out of all the songs I came up with, the shortest one was just over 4 and a half minutes long.

I have an idea of what kind of song to send, now I just have to hunt it down.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Implode, what is the rule with sending songs by the same artist in later rounds?

No more than two songs from the same artist can be submitted by a contestant.

Is that good?

And so far I've received 6 out of 9 submissions.

Sent, took a chance.

P.S.: This is my first roulette participation, so is there a protocol for where the audio should come from? I sent a YouTube link, but maybe that's a bad idea?

These are results for round 1 in order of submission! I apologize for the short comments...I'm not so good at putting feelings of songs into many words.

orcus116 - MoneyGrabber by Fitz and the Tantrums

This song had me dancing at my desk not too long after it started playing. It's just a really fun song, and I'm a sucker for horn sections. It was short, upbeat, and easy to listen to.

4

Ravenheart - Walk Away by Sarah Fimm

As soon as the female vocals came in, I was expecting the songs to break out into a kind of Flyleaf metal way. But to my surprise (and slight relief) it never did. The smooth, flowing melodic line with the subdivision groove underneath creates a dark mood that comes across clearly and easily. It's a nice ambient listen but edging on lifeless. I bet that it's completely intentional, but hey. Like I said, I'm rating these songs as how much I like them and not how much merit I think they have as songs.

3

Iarwain - Somewhere by Hüsker Dü

This song has a great drive, and I can imagine it'd a ton of fun to perform, but unfortunately it's a bit too static for my tastes. That combined with the weaker harmonic progressions in repetition just made me visualize a menu theme from a cheap 90's skateboarding video game.

2

Nekov - Regenerator by Marco Minnemann

As soon as I saw Marco Minnemann was the artist, I was excited to listen to the song. To be honest I had not heard of him before the DT auditions, and he had me wondering what he'd do in a band setting. This song is able to be laid back while the drums maintain a sense of energy. It has a refreshing sound and a really fun vocal melody. Unfortunately it didn't quite make the next number.

3

MasterShakezula - Peaches En Regalia by Frank Zappa

I've seen many a people mention Zappa, but I haven't had the chance to hear for myself. This instrumentation is fascinating. It's just so...feel good. The solos are amazing and exciting to listen to. I can't figure out what else to say.

4

Ħ - Coil by Opeth

I've only heard a few seconds of Opeth before, and I remember thinking, "I wish could get into this music more. A lot of it is freaking beautiful." And that's exactly the case with this song. I thank you for this.

5

energythief - Touched by VAST

This song has plenty of energy. It seems like it wants to push further in the intensity and pull back further during the softer parts. Not sure what to say about this song really except that it didn't blow me away.

3

YtseBitsySpider - White Rhino Tea by Ozric Tentacles

This has some great beats. Not sure why there's a Pull Me Under ending. Is it continued in a another track, did the video just stop, or is that just the end? The ambiance created is wonderful and the key solos are great. I love that flute sound. Over all, just a pretty groovy song.

3

RaphaelRaven - Scarborough Fair by Simon and Garfunkel

This song has a nice soft atmosphere. The echoing vocals are pretty cool, and the harmonies chilling. Is that a harpsichord? Pretty cool. Unfortunately...almost no reaction from me.

3

Right now the standings are:

5 - Ħ
4 - orcus116, MasterShakezula
3 - Ravenheart, Nekov, energythief, YtseBitsySpider, RaphaelRaven
2 - Iarwain

Lots of pretty average songs out there. I'm excited to be wowed!

The second round is also part of a bunch of over used themes:

2. Lovably Light!

Submit a song that is on the lighter side! The lovably is just there for alliteration, the song doesn't have to be "lovely" so long as it's good.

GOGOGO!

Very glad to see that you dug the Zappa tune.  The man was an absolute genius, and of the small-ish portion of his discography I've heard, the album it's from, Hot Rats, is one of his highlights.  And since this is Zappa we're talking, that means it's fantastic!

Anyways, sent!

The first time I actually did well in a roulette!  I'm so happy right now.

EDIT: I know you don't like screaming/harsh vocals, but the new Opeth album due Sept 2011 (called Heritage) has been confirmed to have no death vocals.  There are also plenty of other "gems" from Opeth that you'd enjoy.

^^I know, I was getting used to the BANG-BANG-BANG nature of this roulette, I figured it would be over by Saturday^^

Also, after reviewing his last fm, I expect to finish last.
I simply don't listen to any post rock, and very little pure prog.

Prog Metal
Power Metal
Thrash
Death
Core
these are a few of my favorite things!

Ravenheart is going to so own this roulette.....
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Wft. When did I listen to Miley Cyrus, Rhianna, Taylor Swift, or Katy Perry?

And sorry for the wait, guys. The results will be up tomorrow! And don't be discouraged by what my last.fm says. I haven't been exposed to much more than that. That's what this roulette is for!

What are your guys' impressions about my music tastes so far?
