Only taking that single line out of the interview doesn't really do it justice. It was a great interview!
Thanks for posting!

I've always thought that If everyone in the band practices the songs individually as they are on the CD, then you wouldn't need to rehearse *together* that much. As you would only need to make sure there are no kinks.

And that would be the best way to audition new members, instead of just sitting in a room showing them the parts and that being really boring, give them the songs on a cd in advance and let them learn it.

That way, you're just playing the songs when you get together, not sitting around waiting for them to learn the parts there and then.

Wow, I love this guy, he really seems to be very normal ;) also, with the question about the concept of the album, I've got a feeling that He knows nothing about the lyrics ;) which is understandable, He had to take his time to learn the songs for the setlist and He wasn't involved in song composing :)

This, basically. If someone shows up to practice not knowing the songs then it's a waste of time for everyone else. They'll all have been learning the set on their own for a while before rehearsing together so everything should just slot together.

Whenever I've joined a gigging band that's how it's been. It's been learn these songs and we'll jam on some new stuff when we get in there.

Interesting interview indeed; it's great to see that MM enjoys being in the band and touring with them so much.

"I just want to play the drums. I just want to hit things, and eat them. Yes, I want to hit them and then eat them."

I always think Mangini does seem to have just a sparkle of mania behind the eyes, like he's not entiiiirely on this planet, but I do quite like it. He's got a lot of character, and comes across as one of the loveliest guys in the universe. Really cool man.

^ Although I do think he said " no " a bit quickly when asked if he missed Berklee. Even though his reasoning is wholly understandable.

I don't see anything wrong with that. As it's quite possible to be a bit eccentric and be perfectly sane imo.

Probably because it's a question he's being asked all the time.

No! I agree! I said "I do quite like it!"

Don't let that ever be taken as an insult, because it's absolutely not. I'm just trying to articulate one of those things that I've noticed but I can't quiiiite place. There's always just a hint of something nuclear bubbling away beneath the surface. It's great. He's got a very odd charisma to him but it's a wonderful one.

Wow, what a great interview. Some great questions, especially about the preparation for the tour.
Just listening and watching him, how can you not smile?
I really can't wait to see them this fall.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

" the skeleton was there ". He made the parts his own. this has been discussed at length. Mangini adapted the parts and made them his own.

Yeah I know, that's exactly what the interview said, thus why I said that convo should be put to rest now.

I'm really starting to like this guy.  Appears to clearly be a situation where a nice guy ended up finishing first.  My favorite answer was "No" to if he missed Berklee.  He worked and lived as a teacher to pay the bills and gave it everything he had, but STILL kept the dream of being in a band alive at the age of 47/48.  Awesome.

I found it interesting that they submitted several album names and then John chose one. Seems a different way of doing it as opposed to just brainstorming/choosing a song title.

Actually, I don't think they discussed any band name other than Dream Theater.

He seemed kind of annoyed at some of those questions.

I didn't really get that vibe.

But assuming he was, it's only fair. He's probably been interviewed a few dozen times by now and been asked a lot of the exact same questions over and over.

I mean the ones that were borderline insulting.  I watched it last night, but wasn't there a question like, "So, are you not mixing up the setlist anymore?  Is it because you can't learn all the material?"
