Lonestar's Pandora Discovery Thread
« on: July 31, 2011, 02:18:42 PM »
DISCLAIMER-  I am always late to parties.  Didn't get my first kiss till 18, didn't get laid till 22.  Car, late.  Credit, late.  I always seem to run years behind the pace of society, guess I'm too busy looking around to be bothered with hurrying to keep up.  The technology side of music I was brutally behind on, and have missed out on lots of newer and scarcer bands in the process, so now that I have a proper phone, I can listen to Pandora constantly on my many pedestrian travels.  The purpose of this disclaimer, even though I just got said phone, and I may post a band new to me that most of you will be all "OMG you old fuck, get with the times gramps", remember that I was listening to Dream Theater while the majority of you were learning your ABC's, and was listening to the likes of Yes and Rush before half of the forum was even a drunken cumshot in the back seat of a Chevy Nova.  That being said.....

As said, as I listen, I will come across bands that rock, and will want to know more about them.  Being the lazy fuck I am, instead of doing exaustive research on a band, I will put my faith in you guys.  Having been a member here for a couple of years now, I have come to trust the majority of musical opinions presented, and our preferred styles run in the same circles.  So I will post bands, and the Pandora station that they came from, and you guys can comment in a constructive fashion on them, i.e. albums to look for, historical tidbits, similar artist, etc. (non-constructive comments will only be tolerated if they are really fucking funny).  So, without further senile blathering on my part, my first artist to throw under your epically wise opinions....

Jadis- Inspired by I.Q. station, since none of you assholes listen to I.Q., think early Genesis and Marillion

Armegedon(sp?)- Inspired by DT station

Pendragon- Inspired by I.Q. station, I have heard of them , but never gave them a listen.

So DTF, enjoy making fun of the guy who just crawled out from under a rock, and in the process, help me find some killer tunes. :tup

I would like for Pandora to give me shit that I dig, the only issue is that, even after putting in like 30 different artists that I like, all it can manage to do is give me the same shit over and over and over.

You probably know a shit ton more bands than I do though.  Maybe in a month, this will be a moot thread, but for now......

(mods, I screwed up, please move to General Music, thanks)  Thanks Nick :tup

I highly doubt that. About 90% of the bands on this forum, I've never heard of. :lol

First off I listen to IQ. :p

Next, Pendragon are AMAZING. Seeing them in America a year or so ago was awesome. They are the top Neo-Prog band behind Marillion for me. They have 3 classic albums that you should check out in the following order: The Masquarade Overture, The Window of Life, The World.

I'm just suprised suprised at the lack of love for them here.  When I first joined, I started a thread, looking for some love for one of my favorite band. It got six posts, and died.  I never see them mentioned, except when King gives me crap about my fanboyism for them.  But this place tends to favor the heavier side of the DT audience, for the most part.  It's definatly reflected in Kevshmev's Album of the Year threads.

Musically they are similar to an early Genesis or Marillion, maybe a little "softer" guitar work and instrumental work is more crescendo oriented.  I'm not good at describing music, as you can tell, but here are two vids...

I like IQ! I wouldn't compare them to Marillion or Genesis. I think they sound a lot more like Pendragon. And yeah, it sucks that this band doesn't get much more appreciation.

I knew some of you were out there!!!  Two of my favorite albums are Ever and Subterrenea, and I did have the privelage of seeing them live, a rarity in the states.

So today's band I heard and liked was Riverside.  I have seen them talked about here, but never paid attention.  Good stuff, it was an instrumental piece called Reality Dream Iii.

Honestly......use grooveshark or Spotify.  ;D
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Not bad, not bad at all.  I really like the singers voice, and I feel that it is something that could grow on me.

Even better song by them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWVP_3J-4xc
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

I love The Dear Hunter...and that wouldn't have been in the top 10 songs I would have sent.  Granted, I don't know what's all available on youtube, but the fact that he didn't send you this song shows you letters is really Nick Jr. - even when he succeeds he still fails.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoAtvzImzGY&feature=feedf

My video is also official so it abides by forum rules as well.

Also, this isn't "plug your favorite artists", its make suggestions based on lonestar's tastes.  BTW, good call on early Riverside Ryan.

I was mostly kidding with "plug my shitty favorite artists." There was a lot more I could have put up there if that's what I actually meant to do, but I posted songs I genuinely think he would enjoy.

Based on your love of IQ and Marillion, I am going to suggest "The Tangent".  Start with the earlier albums like The World We Drive Through.  This is one of the few songs I could find, and it's a live version...but you'll get the drift.
