One more math problem to help me with my test!
« on: July 26, 2011, 01:25:02 PM »
Sorry for all the math threads but i have a test in two hours and i'm going over my notes and i don't understand why this is the way it is...

Given log(b6) of 7 = 1.086 and log(b6) of 10 = 1.285 and log(b6) of 2 = .387

Find log(b6) of 35.

What i did was multiplied 1.49 and .565 then divided that answer by 2 to get the answer. But my notes say that's wrong and i don't understand what the notes are saying!

NOTES...

log(b6) of 35 = log(b6) of (10 times 7 / 2)
= log(b6) of 10 + log(b6) of 7 - log(b6) of 2
1.285 + 1.086 - .387

Help?

logn(xy/z) = logn(x) + logn(y) - logn(z)

log6(35) = log6(7) + log6(10) - log6(2)

35 = 7 * 10 / 2

Power rules.  Multiplying with the same base is equivalent to adding exponents, dividing is equivalent to subtracting.

Because logarithms are the inverse, adding = multiplying, subtracting = dividing.

Logarithms aren't hard. :V

But thanks, I guess?

Well, people in general find math hard, when to do what rules. Logarithms are in precalc, a class that not as many people take as well. Trust me on that.

It's not that people can't do it, but it just happens that people either can't grasp it right away, or they have a bad teacher, or they themselves are not putting the effort into trying to understand what is going on.

Well, actually, I learned about logarithms in Algebra 2, which was a required course in high school.

Logarithms in themselves aren't that hard; it's just that most people don't know what they are or how to use them.  And I don't blame them; you don't really need logs in your daily life, unless you live in Vermont or happen to be doing something math- or science-related.

Oh yeah duh, you learn them in Algebra 2.  It's been so long since I learned them, and in college people learn them in precalc.

It may also depend on where you live (state), I think.
