DTF, gimme your best ballads!
« on: July 25, 2011, 08:57:25 AM »
As per thread title, show me what you've got!

I'm a sucker for a good ballad (cheesy or not) , but my collection is seriously lacking.

Here are some of my favourites to use as a reference:

DT - Disappear, Hollow Years, Vacant
Queensryche - Anybody Listening? , Someone Else? , Silent Lucidity (QR is my favourite band for ballads)
PT - Collapse the Light into Earth (unsure if considered), Lazarus, Lips of Ashes
Pink Floyd - Hey You, Comfortably Numb, The Great Gig In The Sky
A7X - I Won't See You Tonight Pt. 1 , Strength of the World
I forgot I even had this account, so what the heck

Wish You Were Here
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

If straight up awesome ballad is what you're looking for, look no further than "Wasted Time" by the Eagles. I LOVE this song.
If you want something along the lines of the style of music you have listed, I'd suggest:

"Love Hurts" - Nazareth
"I Remember You" - Skid Row
"Who Wants to Live Forever" - Queen
"Sister Christian" - Night Ranger
"High Hopes"- Pink Floyd

I mention In The Middle Of A Heartbeat by Helloween; it is a really awesome, if very 80s-ish ballad from the 90s.

    :metal yeah, all almost all Helloween ballads have that good 80's feel, don't You think? A Tale That Wasn't Right, Your Time, Forever And One, even Light The Universe are so great!

I thought he was joking. Awful song.

I love a cheesy 80s style power ballad.

Joe Satriani- Crying, The Forgotten Part II

Alice Cooper- You And Me, I Never Cry, Only Women Bleed, How You Gonna See Me, The Quiet Room, Millie And Billie, Only My Heart Talkin', Love's A Loaded Gun, Burnin' Our Bed.

Aerosmith- Janie's Got A Gun, The Other Side, Cryin', Crazy.

Tyketto- Standing Alone

Giant- I Can't Let Go, I'll See You In My Dreams

Danger Danger- fugitive,

Gotthard- Falling, The Call,

Firehouse- Love Of A Lifetime,

Pink Cream 69- That Was Yesterday,

Extreme- More Than Words, Seven Sundays, Tragic Comic

Queen, Jealousy, Lily Of The Valley, Dear Friends, You Take My Breath Away, Who Wants To Live Forever, TATDOOL, Show Must Go On.

Meat Loaf- Two Out Of Three, Read 'em And Weep, Objects In The Rear View Mirror, Left In The Dark (though Steinman's version is better)

and lots of Bon Jovi songs.

Right on with your props to Queen, but your forgot Spread Your Wings and Teo Torriatte.  Which I guess shows just how good they are at balladry, with so many of their best songs being ballads.  Plus my favorite part of Bohemian Rhapsody is the ballady beginning/ending.

Also, I really adore Babe I'm Gonna Leave You.  Led Zep's version of it, obviously.

And Child In Time.  You can't forget that one.

I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Coheed and Cambria has a lot of great ballads: The Light & The Glass, Wake Up, Mother Superior and Pearl of the Stars.  Also Claudio can turn almost any of their songs into a ballad with a good acoustic version (see Elf Tower New Mexico on the recent SSTB anniversary tour).

Also, our very own Dream Theater has a ton of great ballads.  Aside from what the OP already listed,  Another Day, Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, Take Away My Pain, Anna Lee, The Spirit Carries On, Goodnight Kiss and Wither all spring to mind.

Not really sure if all these would qualify as "ballads", but they are certainly softer songs, most of them are very scaled down:

Oceansize - The Frame
Radiohead - Videotape
Radiohead - Pyramid Song
Porcupine Tree - Trains
Opeth - Isolation Years
Dredg - Sang Real
Anathema - One Last Goodbye
Neil Young - Old Man
Blackfield - Lullaby
Ulver - EOS
Pain of Salvation - This Heart of Mine
The Dear Hunter - Home
Thrice - Digging My Own Grave
The Tallest Man on Earth - Love is All
The Pineapple Thief - Snowdrops
Eisley - Just Like We Do
No-Man - All Sweet Things
Amplifier - White Horses at Sea/Utopian Daydream
Modest Mouse - The World at Large
Kaki King - Life Being What It Is

A few that comes to mind, there are more probably.

Some good stuff there as always Wolfie. I could have gone on and on but thoughjt I'd better stop somewhere. You mention Savatage- need to add A Summer's Rain, When The Crowds Are Gone and the ballads from Streets. And WASP's Sleeping In The Fire

Yeah mate, I could have gone on for hours.  Love those other Tage ones, there's still a few more too.  Wasp simply has some of the best ballads I've ever heard; The Idol, Breathe, Heaven's Hung in Black, Forever Free, What I'll Never Find, Hallowed Ground, and the list goes on.

I see you metioned Danger Danger - Fugitive also.  I gotta say, that is simply one of, if not the greatest melodic rock album I've heard in about the last 5 years, such a perfect album.
