Has Labrie started using harmonizer live?
« on: July 20, 2011, 03:44:20 PM »
First of, I love Labrie's live performance this summer!! I think I've watched every youtube video from this tour! haha..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksAlNVjnGWI&feature=related listen to "will bury my voice in their wake!" 1:00 mark..petrucci isnt anywhere near his mic, and I'm hearing two voices! :) I've would love to hear more of this! It would really lift dt live, espesially on the choruses!

Also, seems that Petrucci has stepped up on backup vocals.

Thoughts?

Maybe JR triggers a sample of James' voice to harmonize...

backing tracks maybe? then mangini would be playing to a click. JR probably triggers it

Good catch, I would love to know where that came from. The only remaining would be MM.

It's just a feeling, but I don't think MM would be good singer... Maybe to me he doesn't have the right looks  :lol

its definitely not mangini. i would guess backing tracks, unless they make harmonizers that can do that?

this is an odd one. I vote backing track, or at least one-shot from jordan and now they play to a click. Or maybe the camera guy just nailed it :P

Jordan probably triggers the click/backing tracks if they do indeed use one. Unless Mangini counts anything in, it's plausible.

Actually, if this is true, I have a question.  When bands use backing tracks, are they playing stems or the actual song?
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. I'm guessing it's a James recording triggered, most likely by JR.

I would assume stems in regards to DT  but if your milli vanilli then the whole song.

Then again Alex lifeson has vocal effects to sound like Geddy I wonder if it is possible to do this with harmonizers.

Listen to the pause between the words "their wake", and also to the vibrato in the word "wake". It sounds too much in sync with LaBrie's actual singing voice in this record. So I doubt it's backing track, it's either a harmonizer or James is singing with playbacks now altogether (LOLno).

Sometimes it's a backing track, whenever you hear James' voice harmonizing. I haven't seen anyone step on a harmony pedal. That high backing vocals in the chorus are JP, we used to do those live back in 94. At least he did at the first Rudess show in 94. In this clip you can hear it better.

it's definitely not a harmonizer in the bury my voice part because the melody goes on a little bit longer.

I hope that's the case.  Absolutely hate when bands use pre-recorded vocals during a concert.  Rush and Yes have definitely been guilty of it in the past.

Where did (the harmony) it come from? why is it here?
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Yeah, I saw this video a few days ago and was wondering the same thing as the OP. How is it that no one who's been to a recent show and has a definitive answer has shown up yet?

It does sound like he might be using one, which I honestly have no problem with. Although I can't actually see John in that video, so I can't tell. But this video sounds similar:

I highly doubt that's a harmonizer he's using though. Jame's singing and the harmony weren't perfectly in sync. It did sound like a backing track.

"Fear Within Me" high harmony part is there.  Definitely triggered by JR....love it!  Brings that element that was missing.

I recall reading an interview right before the tour started where Jordan referenced triggering a few vocal harmonies.

I'll add that this is nothing new.

Remember, during Progressive Nation 09, Portnoy's entire verse on Prophets of War was triggered.

I remember.. but I actually think harmonizing labrie`s parts would have been cool. ITNOG chorus with 3 tight harmonies, Live!

Yeah, it would be. I don't see any reason to be against it, honestly. John Petrucci uses similar technology on his guitar live constantly.

You can check bootleg from Moscow on Dimeadozen, it's great.
And this harmony thing is great, better than effect that is used last year:

Good Catch... it's not a harmonizer...Could be
1. Backing track triggered by JR
2. SampleWIZ!!!!!!!!!! :metal
