The chorus riff to Boston's "More Than A Feeling."
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

Does it count for keys?

Because the very beginning of Rush's Subdivisions is always a sorta spine-chiller.

Same for the beginning of Kansas's Lamplight Symphony.

So many great riffs, I can't count them anymore. Just any riff with a badass overdrive sound, unexpected groovy syncopations or cool tonal surprises sound great to me. I'm a sucker for those, that's for sure. That's why I can't possibly lose my love for metal, never.

Totally agree with this!

Also, I'll suggest:

Decapitated - Nihility
Nevermore - The Psalm of Lydia
Rush - The Big Money
Megadeth - Take No Prisoners (the whole song has crazy riffs)
Opeth - The Grand Conjuration

Some old school riffs that you guys might not think of or know and might wanna check out at some point...

Intro from Red Sky by MSG
The main riff from How Many More Times by Led Zep (very smooth bass playing on that one by the way...)
Sails of Charon by the Scorpions
All of the riffs in "In Keeping of Silent Earth" by C&C
And I know that it's not cool to mention Pull Me Under around here but, that opening riff is what first got the attention of a lot of us older DT fans and there's a good reason for that.
All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again

There are so many good ones I could probably go on and on.  Think I'll just throw out a few from my 3 favorite bands instead

Red Barchetta - 3:40ish right at the end of the guitar solo and drum roll.  Always puts me in head-banging mode
La Villa Strangiato - the opening/recurring one.
Natural Science - at 2:20 when the song starts picking up.
Dreamline - the opener.  Very sharp and simple
The Analog Kid - the opener.  Love how it just goes up, and right back down.  Nice arpeggio
Passage to Bangkok - the opener.  just a really cool riff.  And Jerry Stiller headbanging to it in R30 is such a chuckle

Dazed and Confused - the recurring one first heard at 1:15 and at the end of every verse.  Plus, it's got a great bass riff to open the song
Whole Lotta Love - as previously mentioned.  Probably my favorite riff of all time
Custard Pie - Another great opening riff that opens a great album
Achilles Last Stand - two riffs in one ... the guitar and the bass doing a different riff.  Both rule.

Home - 2 words ... womp womp
The Glass Prison - it's a riff factory.  The opener, the start of Restoration, and then the bass-guitar unison leading into the wankery section
In the Name of God - it's another riff-fest.  Opener, "Straight is the path", the end of the unison at 10:00.  Love it!
Lines in the Sand - around 4:00ish ... sharp as a dagger.
Ytse Jam - not much to say here.  We all know and love it.
A Change of Seasons - such a contrast to come out of the funeral march into the amazing opening riff

I couldn`t resist a few honorable (classic rock) mentions
Blue Oyster Cult - Don`t Fear the Reaper ... I`ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell
Nazareth - This Flight Tonight
Layla
Foghat - Slow Ride
Jimi Hendrix - Foxey Lady
Stones - Start Me Up; Jumpin Jack Flash; Paint it Black... man, they`ve got some really great, but simple ones.

I`ll stop it there before I really ramble on.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Strapping Young Lad - Wrong Side (the riff that starts the song.)

And did anybody say The Dark Eternal Night yet?

Outro riff from Pull Me Under... Main one in Lie. What about the start of About To Crash (Reprise)? Just Let Me Breathe comes to mind as well. The Count of Tuscany at 3:55! PANIC ATTACK?!

You guys disappoint me.

Vast has always had some pretty memorable riffs for me, specifically those to Here and Be With Me. The intro to Rocket by The Smashing Pumpkins is hypnotizing and never gets old. The acoustic guitar strumming to Nutshell by Alice In Chains is devastating and haunting.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

I consider the intro riff as the main riff since it gets repeated the most, I think. It's quite a meshuggah ripoff btw.

Eh, it's not a great riff. I mean it's not bad, but it's just kind of there. Pretty odd timing wise, but still just 1 note.

Anything by John Petrucci. The man is a genius at guitar work. Riffs, progressions, and solos.

Best riff ever as far as I'm concerned: He Man Woman Hater by Extreme. I don't mean the bumblebee intro bit, I mean the awesome one with bending after 'no women allowed.'

Other than that, Battery by Metallica and Snow by the Chilis are pretty great riff-wise.

The thing with La Grange is I'm pretty sure I've heard the exact same riff in at least two other songs, both of which I think were older. Not sure what the songs were called though. Still, a great riff.

Great thread so far, I love hearing monstruous (sp?) riffs. But everybody has failed to mention Amorphis, the authors of some of the most catchy-emotional-brutal-melodic-dynamic-awesome (all at the same time) riffs ever:

Better Unborn
Against Widows (OMG!!!)
On Rich and Poor (No words can describe this one)
My Kantele
Elegy (at around 3:10 where the guitar and piano play the melodic riff against the brutal vocals)
Relief (These guys are not from this world)
Two Moons
Leaves Scar (the main theme)
Perkele -the God of Fire (can you resist headbanging to that?)
The Smoke (sweet and brilliant)
Brother Moon
Into Hiding
The Castaway
Drowned Maid

Man, these guys can write metal riffs
