Sometimes People Make Me Mad (World Cup-related)
« on: July 17, 2011, 07:27:32 PM »
So I'm browsing through Facebook, and here are some fun statuses:

"Fuck Japan"

"really? screw japan"

"japan is so annoying"

"japan you suck america you are so much better"

"those shitty japanese don't deserve this"

Like... What the fuck? I understand wanting America to win but why are people saying these things about Japan? This is a country that just got hit with a friggin' tsunami with thousands of people dead and injured! Can't we at least find some solace in the fact this win is a really nice ting for them?

Ugh.

People suck. If you can't deal with that, nothing you can do.

Do what I do. Become a cynical dickbag and have everybody hate you. If no one will talk to you, you don't have to deal with the fact that everybody sucks.

Americans are funny. We pretend to get excited about soccer, almost passionate even, whenever there's a World Cup and promptly forget about it when we get eliminated. I almost guarantee these people won't even remember who the US was playing come two weeks from now.

Just another reason for the rest of the world to hate and/or pity us, and in many if not most cases, I dont blame them.

That's weird, because my news feed has people saying the US deserved the loss because they played poorly. :-\

I felt the opposite.  If we lost it was good to see Japan win.  It may seem like nothing but I bet it helped many people in Japan.

Also, nobody said anything that I saw on FB so all your friends must be tools.

it is uh

it is a very common thing, i think for people to really be uh

like, assholes about sports

like people see it as some sort of huge cultural thing or some bullshit when really it's just two teams playing a game and one scores more points than the other

my least favorite though is when there's like a disaster or something

and then a sports team wins some sort of game and you have people crying and saying how it's shown that the community or the country has really pulled together and is healing or some shit when all that happened is a team scored more points than another team at playing a game

Not healing sona but it takes their minds off of what's around them.  It was a great distraction for them.

I agree with this,

it takes their minds off of what's around them.  It was a great distraction for them.

and this:

the US deserved the loss because they played poorly.

Glad I don't have those kind of friends.  Mine were just like "aw, too bad US, better luck next time" or "Japan deserved this, well done."

This actually reminds me somewhat of the twitter/facebook posts following the Tsunamis saying stuff like "THAT WAS FOR PEARL HARBOR!"  Because Hiroshima and Nagasaki weren't enough?

The most hilarious part is no one cared about the women's world cup until two days ago when we were in the finals, and no one will care in a matter of weeks.  Everyone's just acting passionate to get in on the new trend.

None of that in my Facebook feed, only (sad) admissions that the Japanese played a good game and deserved to win as much as the US. But, I am also very selective who is my FB friend and who is not.

americans suddenly care about soccer because some women's team made it to a final of a tournament they didn't know existed.

Look, aren't you an American?  The US women's soccer team had a goal to accomplish, which was make sure that the Japanese still know their place relative to us.  And they failed.  Your patriotism should compel you to sadness.

Er, wait, if I remember you have some kind of Canadian in you.  So I guess trying to explain all this to you is fruitless.  Whatever.

Why is everyone so damn cynical all the time?  Soccer is gaining in popularity in the USA and its something a lot of people have wanted to happen for a long time.  And now that its happening, its just a trend or a stupid bandwagon.  No, I think its actually picking up some steam.
If anyone in this thread judge him; heyy James WTF? about you in Awake In Japan? Then I will say; WTF about you silly?

Which is frightening to me.  Soccer is like the Hangover II of sports.  Not very smart, nothing really happens, and no real substance either, but it has an undeniable reputation and appeals to the absolute lowest common denominator.

While I find the fatness of some US Football players to be off-putting, lineman don't really need to be lean like receivers or quarterbacks.

I find the existence of fat Baseball players completely inexcusable though.  I dislike Baseball almost as much as Soccer.

I dunno, not that I'm a big sports fan myself (I like doing sports, not so much watching them), but the allure of soccer is exactly its simplicity of its rules and that everybody can play it once you have a ball. And it's damn hard too. And when you have to teams playing it, it's almost like ballet on grass.

You must not like sports, because that isn't "all that happens."

i think my favorite part of soccer was that one time when one of the players kicked a ball and then another one of the players kicked the ball and then another one kicked the ball and then one of them kicked it into a goal

i get very emotional over that stuff i tell you what

Every time I sit and watch a soccer match I always feel the same way after it's over which is the feeling that I lost a few hours of my life that I'll never get back.

In my mid 20s I lived in Norway for a little while and there was an epic battle between Norway and Sweden on TV.  I watched it from start to finish not really understanding much about soccer.

They never scored!

Let me repeat that

THEY NEVER SCORED!

I remember screaming at the TV when everyone was shaking hands and walking off the field, "THIS CAN'T BE OVER!!  NO ONE SCORED"

So I watched the match yesterday and there was scoring.  Great!  But the Americans choked and I still don't like soccer.
When I die, I want to go peacefully in my sleep just like my grandfather, and not like the screaming passengers in his car!

Well, good for them.  That's great.....for them.  But.....I couldn't really care less about soccer, the world cup or facebook.  However, I don't see why someone would say they don't deserve it.  Who could possibly deserve it more than the winning team?  :lol
