So I know the basic story behind Frances, but does anyone here know what the hell De-Loused is about?

So I know the basic story behind Frances, but does anyone here know what the hell De-Loused is about?

Its about a friend of Cedric and Omar's who goes into a coma after shooting some rat poison and experiences a different world.  Around 'Take The Veil' is where he wakes up, 'Televators' describes his suicide.  There's a site with the whole story written out and there is like a novel or something that acts as a companion to the songs, what I've described is just the general gist, theres a whole bunch of other weird stuff

Pretty much sums it up. It's really easy to find the .pdf of the story, u can pretty much just google it. It's a tough read, though.

Going back to the argument of what's a 'concept album' (all songs have a theme) vs a traditional 'rock opera' (story line, characters, locations ...), I'll nominate Space Metal by Star One as a concept album.

That's not my problem with concept albums. I don't care if there is an obvious connection between songs but every band seems to label their new album a concept album by loosely tying their songs together by some non-existent theme as some effort to make it seem more interesting, or so that's how it looks. Over-imaginative fans tend to do the same as well such as some people thinking Octavarium or In Absentia are concept albums.

Some albums I enjoy both for story purposes and musical pleasure, and others I enjoy for one or the other. I immensely enjoy a good story, but there is something majestic about a perfectly crafted score. Here are some albums I own:

Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2
Dream Theater - Octavarium
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Mastodon - Leviathan
Thrice - The Alchemy Index
Rhapsody - Symphony of Enchanted Lands
Rhapsody - Dawn of Victory

Rhapsdoy - Rain of a Thousand Flames (EP)
Opeth - Still Life
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Epica - The Divine Conspiracy

Kamelot - The Black Halo

Edit:

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Kamelot - Epica
Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns
Between the Buried And Me - Colors
No Doubt - Rock Steady

Well really, a rock opera is just a KIND of concept album.  A concept album can even be just the theme of the album even when songs have no real connection to them, like Sgt. Pepper.  So rock operas are concept albums too, its just that its the only kind of concept album thats been given a name.

I'd say Kamelot's Epica and The Black Halo are the gold standard for concept albums in terms of lyrics.
"In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry, and has been widely regarded as a bad idea."

I know it's self indulgent and entirely too waters-based, but I love it.

I forgot about Our Lady Peace------Spiritual Machines.  Based of a book written by Raymond Kurzweil.  The 1999 book The Age of Spiritual Machines.  Great album.  He also narrates the album.

the whole "Concept Album" term is rather ambiguous; you could say most albums in general are "concept." I guess when referring to "Rock Operas" it's a bit more specific.

I agree with the original poster about The Who's "Quadrophenia" it's a "Rock Opera" and later made into a movie which had Sting make a cameo. Both the movie, and especially the album I find to be highly superior to the one they're much more well-known for in "Tommy."

But as far as "Concept Albums"..I guess I'd just look at a large percentage of my favorite albums of all-time.

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/SoundscapeMN/the_100__and_beyond__

Marillion - Brave
Kevin Gilbert - The Shaming of the True (this is maybe the most *important* concept or other album to me, in it's many messages about the music industry).
Soundscape - Discovery
Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element I
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray
King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska
dredg - El Cielo
The Receiving End of Sirens - Between the Heart and the Synapse
Angra - Holy Land
Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV: Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness
Pink Floyd - Animals
Kaddisfly - Set Sail the Prairie
Apes and Androids - Blood Moon
The Dear Hunter - Act II: The Meaning of and All Things Regarding Ms.Leading
Return to Forever - Romantic Warrior
Between the Buried and Me - Colors

Looks like I'm dusting this topic off.  I've seen a lot of concept albums listed that I really like as well!

My favorites are:

(not in any particular order)
Dream Theater - Scenes From a Memory
Iced Earth - The Dark Saga
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime
Kamelot - Epica and Black Halo
Avantasia - The Metal Opera parts 1 & 2
Blind Guardian - Nightfall on Middle Earth
Ayreon - The Human Equation
Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
